I have decided to start carrying a knife with me that i would be using for light tasks such as opening letters and boxes and I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions. I would like the blade of the knife to be 3 inches or less and I only have about $50 to spend, but other than that I am open to any suggestions. I live in the US and knife laws where I live are pretty relaxed so laws are not really a problem. I am new to knives so I really do not know that much about the different makers, but I have taken a liking to Spyderco. Thanks in advance, i decided to come here because i heard you guys are the most knowlegeable people, i hope i was right ha ha.

Welcome!

Spyderco Delica 4 sounds perfect for your needs. It comes in black frn and a saber grind or 5 different colors and Full Flat ground.

Also, take a look at the Native and Centofante.

Really if it's just for small shit you can get a pocket razor blade for like 5 bucks. Or a multitool or sak might be good, just cause it gives you all kinda nifty little tools.

No need to spend 50 bucks just for opening boxes. You could even just grow out your thumbnail for that.

Welcome.
I came here just over a year ago and you heard right.

There is a wealth of knowledge and alot of folks willing to share their knowledge, experience and recommendations.

I do not have any Spydercos but I have a Byrd Meadowlark(their lower price Chinese line) and it is a fine knife and great value at less than $25.

\I am sure you will get a ton of suggestions and that is part of the fun-trying different brands and models. There are some excellent knifes from less than $10 (Rough Rider) to the sky is the limit!

$50? Get a kershaw or Chinese spyderco and a SAK.......

....... God, I sound like a pusher lol

Welcome Pontiac. It really is hard to go wrong with a Spyderco. Kershaw makes some nice stuff within your price range too.

Keep us posted and have fun. Stick around here long enough and you'll be broke but with a variety of knives to chose from. Just like many of us.:p

Hi Pontiac,

If you don't care whether a knife is new or used the exchange here on Bladeforums is a great way to get even more knife for your dollar. One of my favorite folders is a D2 mini-griptilian my brother found and gave to me. Lucky find I know!

The Spyderco Delica 4 FFG or Kershaw RAM would be great options at that price. Very versatile and well made.

Try a Victorinox Farmer in silver alox. You will get greater longevity and versatility out of it and still stay below your budget.

Just get a very basic 4 or 5 tool Victorinox Swiss Army Knife (SAK) at your local Target/Walmart and call it a day. You should have two sizes of sharp cutting blades, 1 pair scissors, and a Phillips/plain head screwdriver/bottle opener at the very least. Sounds like that would fit the bill and would be under $25.00 total. Plus you have tons of colors to choose from. Good Luck!

Pontiac, you are getting some very good suggestions. Here's another vote for the Delica 4 FFG.

I'd have a look at the Kershaw Skyline ($35 online or at your local big-box) or a Spyderco Persistence. Delicas are also very nice, but I have yet to find them available for $50 or less. As much as I'd like to suggest a SAK as a starter blade, I'm a pretty big proponent of having a one-hand-opening blade everywhere you go.

Also, YouTube review TheCajunBlaze has a video of good knives under $50. The info is a few years old, but it's definitely worth a look. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQWR5tjmjic

Pontiac,
Welcome to the Forum.
I my opinion, Spyderco full flat grind Deliva or Native will be a good choice for you.

Does anyone have experience with Case knives? I like the traditional and "non-threatning" look of them, but I have no idea if they use good quality steel.

Case is very well loved on the forum. i think that their knives usually use different steels. once you start researching, you will either get hooked and become a steel snob or you will never care again. both are probably fine. go with what you like. there is no use getting something you never will carry.

I have used Case kives for a few years and I have found that for an EDC, the Case knives are fine. Sure they are not the latest and greatest (greatest being subjective) but they get the job done. They look nice and have more personality (IMHO) than the tacticool knives. The only thing you loose is the one handed opener and clip but can be found on the the mid-huner from Case. Gives these modern options on a classic look).

Best of luck,
John

I am a big Cold Steel fan, so I'd recommend the mini-Lawman. It would have the blade size you are looking for, and you can get it anywhere but their website at the price you are looking to pay. My EDC is a Recon 1, and the mini-Lawman is made the same way, but smaller. The main reason I recommend it is for the tri-ad lock. I looked into many different knife makers before getting the Recon 1, and the Tri-Ad Lock was the main selling point. I have not seen a better one on the market. Now that I have the knife, I have found that the handle actually becomes MORE comfortable in my hand as my hand sweats during use. The grip is very secure, another good safety feature. Cold Steel advertises their knifes as weapons, in a very silly way, but I have found their blades to be very useful and practical tools.
