Man it seem a long time ago that it was camping season. We are getting 5-8 inches more snow today. Its gonna be -20 again tonight with wind chills to - 45.North Dakota has had a cold winter so far and I see by the National weather that many of you are having the same kind of weather. What do you do to keep the spirits up during this crap? I have been working on my Emergency survival stuff but that only takes so long.

I plan on getting a crazy amount of dirt time this summer. Between school and this weather I'm really getting anxious. I don't know how yankees and alaskans handle this for a longer duration (I'm just in KY).

Sadly my anxiousness starts coming out in the form of blade lust! I've already got too many that won't be able to see enough use. There are a couple of blades I'm looking at getting ($$), but then I'm going to find a couple I like and sell off the rest...

I hear ya udtjim. We just got another 6" of snow last night here in SE Michigan. On top of that, MI ranks up there with the state of Washington when it comes to hours of sunlight as opposed to cloud cover. The sky pretty much turns gray at the end of October and stays that way 'til the end of March. Sometimes the lack of sunshine seems worse than the cold and snow.

Like Spooky, my blade lust kicks in, and I already have too many as well so I do a lot of window shopping but little buying.

Soon I'll be digging out the fishing gear and respooling reels, stocking up my my favorite baits, and praying for ice-out. I even passed on applying for my Turkey permit this year so I can focus on getting out on the water a bit more this year. What that does to cure the winter blues right now is absolutely nothing. I'm just rambling.

Honestly, to keep the spirits up this time of year, I've been turning to my dog. Getting out for a walk when I can, keeping her busy so neither one of us plump up or go stir crazy.

Good luck to ya.
Chris

We can all speed up global warming by each taking the initiative and increasing our carbon footprint.:D I am on board.

I'm thinking of trading out my Koster bushcraft and the Tora bushcraft for an ML knife or two, and maybe the RC4 if it fits my hand right. Likely the glock knife and a couple of piddly ones to sell too... But who knows, my feelings about this are as fickle as kentucky weather. Ok, maybe not that fickle, but close...

I have the fishing stuff pretty much ready to go already. I respooled last fall and sorted the tackle. I live to fish as well. The boat is pretty much ready after I unload all the stuff that gets tossed in there for the winter.

Like many of you, I have ten times (at least ) more knives than any man could ever need or use. I have sharpened all of them, even the ones that didn't need it. I am about ready to start on the wife's butter knives. Can't wait for that global warming to get to North Dakota.:D

Don't ya love how your boat turns into a storage bin every year? My boat isn't what you'd call big by any means yet somehow it ends up holding 2,000 cubic feet of junk by spring. :o

If you need something to do for the remaining dozen-or-so weeks of winter, you can find some interesting kits and projects here for reasonable prices: http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/

Check out the Lure Making section for unpainted crankbait bodies and order the free catalog while you're there.

Hope this helps,

Chris

Practice in the backyard, kids were driving me crazy so I did this to get them outside...it worked:D! but the down side is they are pestering even more to go camping as soon as we can:grumpy:

Take up cross country skiing. It is great exercise and you will probably have the woods to yourself. We used to do that when I lived up in MA, and it was a lot of fun. Snowshoes, snowmobiles, etc. I wish we actually got some appreciable snow here. I miss playing in the white stuff.

I snapped this a couple hours ago. Its snowing much harder now. I hope the wife can get home from work. Tomorrow the wind is supposed ti hit big time.

I used to ski but age and broken bones have sort of put an end to that. Thats a friends snow machine. Thanks for the tips so far. My wife does let me cook and do dishes.

The weather has been teasing us terribly here for the past couple weeks, it's making me insane. One day it will be almost 50, sunny, t-shirt weather, the next day, 0F and -20F windchills and snow. Today it was almost 40, tomorrow, 24, then 19 on Friday, then back to almost 40 again. Somebody please club me over the head so I can pass through late winter and spring in a coma. There's really not much to miss.

I can definitely sympathize with those of you that have cabin fever. We had a warm front today -- got up to 20:eek:. Mostly it has been a lot colder. The trouble is when I can't get out enough I medicate my desire by purchasing knives and gear (which I don't really need since I mostly want to simplify, simplify). My other escape is to read good books (right now its Cache Lake Country by John Rowland); the only problem is they make me want to get out even more!
