Good grit for beginner sharpener/lesser steels

for most kitchen jobs, finishing on a Norton fine india or crystolon will be ok. while the edge will not be highly polished, it will work well slicing and dicing the heathen carrots and onions that invade our kitchens. your $6 economy stone will produce outstanding results once you get technique down.
Scott, many agree w/ you. These economy stones you can find at hardware stores. It's a good one to learn on. But the 70's Norton IB-8 is more than a step up from it. This and a strop w/ slurry will take you a long way in sharpening while offering good economy. DM
