How high is your grinder mounted? I stand when I grind and my grinder is a little too high, so I might have to cut out a slot in my work bench and add a lower platforum for it to sit on. The knife rest is currently about mid chest high, which makes it tough to control the blade. I'd rather look down on my work and have a little leverage. I guess I could always make something to step up onto, so I don't have to chop up my nice work bench that runs the whole length of one side of my garage.

Make a step if need be. Much easier than modifying your bench. Just make it big enough so you don't accidentally slip off it and twist your ankle. Don't ask how I know about this.

Correct height dependes on the person. It has to be comfortable to work on as well as being safe. If too high or low you should know. Adjust accordingly until it feel correct. I have mine where my hands are middle of the platen when I have my arms bent and elbows tucked into my side. Works for me. Initially I had it too low and looking directly down was killing my neck. Bringing it up a bit did the trick.

I'm with jll346 . As I was taught , you tuck your arms in your side resting on top of your hip bones . you move your hips side to side to move the blade across the wheel . In this position , my machine is set so that the blade is at center or just below center of the contact wheel .

I have mine set where the contact wheel center lines right up with my belly button. That put's it so my arms are nearly a perfect 90 degree bend and I just sway back and forth with my arms locked at my sides.

I grind similar to Tracy, my elbows are at 90 degrees, but I brace my wrists on my beer gut :D

I currently don't have a wheel for hollow grinding.

I did some shuffling around in the shop and found a spot that's lower, but it's not in the location I want. My manufacturing engineering days force me to seek strategic locations to place my tools.

All this hip and body swaying is conjuring up bad images in my mind. I can just see a bunch of you shake'n it like MC Hammer while you're grinding.

Thanks.

I grind sitting down. That is odd for most folks but I get mucle spaz bad if I stand to long.
But every thing eles is the same.Elbows tucked in and move side to side with your uper body. That works for me But may not work for most folks.Just play around with it till it fells wright to you.

Tracey has t by my standard. Even with the oganic tool rest - belly button height.!

Rob!
