Hello, My brother has asked for a hunting knife for Christmas and being the knife freak I am I must accommodate him :D I would love to search the forums but unfortunately all I get is a error page?! I don't have alot of money to spend but want something decent. Any help is appreciated!

Cold Steel Master Hunter. My preference is Carbon V but AUS8 is pretty good, too. The sheaths generally are not as good as the knife but you can get one made (Normark comes to mind) for his birthday. Then there are Doziers, Marbles, a whole bunch from A. G. Russell and myriad others. Have fun shopping.

If he likes stainless, Cabelas Alaskan Guide Buck Vanguard. If he likes carbon steel, one of the Bark River models, like the Fox River or Gameskeeper.

I just picked up a Buck 728 "Whitetail Collection" Hunter from Wal Mart for my nephew who wants to start hunting next season.

It's a nice knife for the money ($25), but I think it's a discontinued model as I can't find any reference to it at Buck's web page. The price I paid at WM was a clearance price.

Comes in a black leather storage box with a decent nylon sheath. The scale material is Birch and looks okay. What caught my attention is that it's 440c, which is a great steel for that kind of money.

Downside, it's not a made in USA Buck, it's one of the ones they have made overseas.

There's one on eBay right now (not affiliated with seller, nor can I vouch for them) for $15 + $8 for shipping if you act quick, it ends in ~8 hours.

See it here.

Or you can try your luck at your local WM.

The S30V Buck's at Cabela's are very hard to beat, a steal at the prices their asking.

It would help if we knew your budget and what kind of game he hunts. It would also help if we knew if he likes traditional materials or if he appreciates a really good plastic.

For rubbery type handles at a low price you might concider either the Benchmade 10500 or 10510 hunting knives (note that the 10510 has a thin and narrow handle that may be too small for some). They are both deeply hollow ground for excellent cutting and have N690 alloy blades that get very sharp and are relatively hard for long edge holding. http://www.newgraham.com/rant_fecas.htm

For a more traditional look at a low price you might consider the Queen cutlery hunting knives with D2 alloy blades. A canoe hunter with stag bone handle would be a classic: http://www.bullmancutlery.com/catalog/queen/index.html

If you have to find something at a local sporting goods store and your choice is limited I would go for a Buck Vanguard model. Even with 420HC alloy blade it is just an excellent design that it will serve him well: http://www.agrussell.com/knives/by_...ves/buck_vanguard_with_rubberized_handle.html

Another design that you might find in a local store for reasonable money is the Cold Steel All Terrain Hunter. The blade shape and handle are very effective and the non-stainless carbon V blade will give great performance, if you don't let it rust: http://www.coldsteel.com/36e1.html

DOZIER

Go to www.dozierknives.com and look through their hunting knives. When you are ready go to vintageknives.com or the A. G. Russell site and see what there is to buy for delivery right away. If you want the best get him a custom made Dozier with the best (read sharpest) D2 steel around.

Happy Hunting,
rgc

I just got a sog field pup and it seems like a good knife aus8 and is a good size for someone that will be skinning deer mine was just over 30$ but the cold steel hunter are real nice to I have used one skinning and it is top of the line. You should think about how he is about takeing care of such things as keeping his gun oiled I have seen some people around here that should never have a carbon steel knife since they need to be taken care of to keep them from rusting. It is nice not to have to worry about your knife some times when you come back from hunting.

Great minds think alike...
I have to agree with this very exact selection of knives, as they are the same two I was pondering for a Christamas gift for my brother as well. I believe you can get the Cabelas in a fixed or folding blade with S30V steel, or the Bark River(s) comes in A2 with a very nice convex grind. If you have the cash, though, like mucho $$$$$$, maybe think about a Dozier custom with a high hollow grind...

Great! Thanks for all your help! My price range is below $100. He is the kind of person who would much rather just use it one season and not worry about it till next. This is alot to thing over (and little time to do it!). Also what do you guys think of gut hooks? Good, bad, indifferent? Keep those suggestions coming!

I gave two hunting knives as gifts this year, a Northwoods Drop Point ( $45 at DLT Trading, and bought one for myself too) and a Bark River Woodland ( $75 at AG Russell). But since they're Christmas gifts I obviously haven't received any field reports on the knives' capabilities yet.

I also like the Grohmann knives and the Buck Vangard. But I'm not a hunter and my knives are mostly for lookin' at.

Plenty of choices. Happy shopping,
Bob

The Buck 728 is the Christmas model for this year. Special knife ,packaging, etc.

The Spyderco/Bill Moran drop point would be a good choice, as would a Benchmade 145 Nimravus Cub.

might check the gerber freeman with s30v at cabelas...about $90. looks like a full tang with nice cocobolo handles.
