I live in North Alabama and we apparently don't have a local spring shop that would carry spring stock that I could buy.

I want to make a machete for a friend and for practice.

Who has a good source for spring steel close to N. AL where the delivery/shipping costs won't eat me alive?

Thanks,

Albin

You can scavenge truck leaf springs from the local auto scrapyard. If you have one nearby, you can get them for just a coupla dollars usually.
Good Luck!

All the best,

If you have a John Deere dealership/repair shop nearby, ask them if they have any used "Load Control Shafts" laying around. These are an excellent source of 5160 "Spring Steel" if you are forging the machete.

Good luck and have fun!

Actually, I won't be forging or else I'd already be at the local scrap/auto repair yards. I need steel that is already straight and annealed.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Albin

Well you could try these guys:

http://www.admiralsteel.com/products/blades.html

Yes, you would have to pay shipping. However, 3/16ths x 1.5" by 36" of 1084 is only $9. Places like Kovals also sell small amounts. http://kovalknives.com/home.htm a bit cheaper.

However what you really want is 5160. Admiral only sells it in 22' lengths.

Hmmmm, Texasknife.com sells 5160 1/4 x 1 3/4 for $6.75 a foot. Kinda pricy buy at least you can get small quantities.
