Hi,

Just wondering what you guys think is a decent brand of "grocery store" coffee. For those times, (most of the time), when you don't want to break out the Kona.:)

In my area, Bi-Lo French Roast is quite good.

Eight o'clock is surprisingly alright. Especially their french roast.

I like Cadillac (might be a Detroit regional thing though) as well as 8 o'clock. I also like the Cafe du Monde chicory blend (find it in the international aisle at Meijer's)

Folgers has begun marketing a variety of "gourmet" coffees; we like the Black Silk variety pretty well.

My wife and I tried that one but found it a bit weaker than we liked. Surprisingly, the much less expensive Bi-Lo brand was superior in our opinions.

Hi,

I've tried the 8 o'clock, and it's OK. I think I've seen the Bi-Lo somewhere. Don't remember where though. I'm actually working on a small can of French roast Great Value from Wally-land. Fair aroma, but no body for a french roast. More like a light breakfast blend.

I've been a Folgers fan for most of my life. And I do like their more up scale roasts. Just trying to test some others.

I don't know how available it is in the US (or if it's rebranded or whatever), but if I'm drinking 'instant' it's Carte Noire or Nescafe Alta Rica. Not the cheapest by any means, but I'm picky about my coffee.

the last couple of yrs all i use is the kona blends, i really dont care for the others anymore, and since i dont drink liquor anymore i dont mind spending $9 or so on a lb (or whatever it is lol) of coffee.

Dunkin Donuts grounds started showing up at my local grocery stores recently. I rather like it.

The difference between instant in Europe and instant coffee in the States is just about beyond words. I'd be all over the Euro stuff. Our instant is dehydrated fecal evil.

There's that, yes.

I buy Dunkin Donuts whole bean. Goes with my burr grinder and french press. Pre-ground coffee is too fine for a french press, and I don't like drip machines. That's about the limit of my coffee geekiness.

That bad? I'd say the higher-end instant stuff we get only just passes as 'coffee'.

I really need to get another espresso machine

A bit off topic, but I think French press is the most notable thing that separates US from UK English.

I can just imagine some European bloke showing off this new invention in the States:

"What is it?"
"It's a cafetière"
"A what?!"
"A cafetière"
"Stuff that; it shall now be known as a French pressy thingy"

:D

Maxwell House instant regular is standard in this house. It's nothing special, just a good, no nonsence, working coffee, that can be made without fuss or the hassle of cleanup.

Becareful when looking at the label. Don't buy the half caff, if you like regular normal coffee. I bought a jar by accident, and couldn't figure out why the coffee was dead in the cup. After seeing it was half caff, I poured it out into the trash and called their 800 number and gave them my opinion about it. They reimbursed me for the purchase with a free replacement.

We buy the Beans (8'Oclock) and then grind them as we need them. A good small electric grinder is about $25 - we've had our for at least 8 years.

My Wife is more the connis.. con-i-sew...... Coffee lover - but I can taste the appreciable difference in the 8'Oclock over the Folgers Beans.

Also, Consumer Reports recently ranked the 8'Oclock higher than most other expensive brands. (I'll take useless knowledge for $100 Alex)

Hi,

I saw some Dunkin' Donuts coffee in the store. I left it there because I've not been a fan of their brewed stuff when I tried some the last time I was in the big evil city. Maybe the beans are better.

Instant coffee is a crime against nature and should be a capital offense. Don't matter where it's from.

Interestingly, my Wife likes the Wally-Land French Roast. So she's going to use it up. Me, I got a new grinder and a sack of 8 o'clock beans. Is much better than the pre-ground we used to buy. I saw some Yuban that I'm going to try next.

if you have a costco by you they roast their own beans in store and sell a 2.5 lb bag for I think 20 bucks and they are very good. Also whole foods has 1.5 lb bags of organic whole bean for around 15 and they are pretty good too.

Hello,

I roast my own in house (it's cheaper than you would imagine), but I'm not going to recommend you do that unless you really like coffee...

The biggest thing that you can do to make your coffee better is to stop using water straight from the tap. If you're using tap water right now, and don't own a Brita filter (or something similar), use some bottled water and you should be able to taste a huge difference. The Brita filters last months, so the cost isn't too steep.

Without changing the coffee brand, the filter, the ratio, etc., if you use better water the coffee will be much better.

Cheers! I love coffee!

:)

A neighbor of mine is Israeli and gifted me some standard issue Israeli army turkish coffee. I guess everybody is hooked on this stuff for life after they serve. I can see why. Its amazing and inexpensive. Ultra-fine ground and you just stir into your water and let settle outfor a couple minutes for a STEErong brew. Great camping coffee. comes in a pouch. Get some.
