Good jazz?

Some friends and I almost named our band "Felonious Monk" but decided it would be too disrepectful.

Thanks much guys, too many good suggestions to try multi-quoting everyone. Many great folks, and some I've not heard of. I do have 'Kind of Blue' and 'A Love Supreme', so I'm not totally uninitiated. :p You guys gave a good array of stuff to look into. :thumbup:
 
Luckily enough, I once had the coolest job in the world fall into my lap. In 1995, through a series of extremely fortunate circumstances, I fell into a gig as a part of the start-up crew for Berlin's first Jazz Radio Station. I helped soundproof the studio, helped wire the board/studio & trained the on-air staff. I was the "morning guy" for about a year until we ran through a couple rounds of funding & I got laid off.
Lo & behold, years later, the station has a new owner, a terrestrial FM signal (which we didn't have at the time- no FM = NO advertising). Many changes since those days- the new station looks like a fashion show. ( www.jazzradio.net ) a far cry from when we worked around the clock in the back of what was once an upholstery shop. Learned a lot & am enjoyiong this thread.

BTW- some Chet Baker played at the right moment(s) will certainly help you get laid.

The Jazz world lost something special when Stevie passed.

Here's someone you've never heard of -- a guy named Smokey Joe Leone who hangs out on the harp-l mailing list, which is kind of the Bladeforums of the harmonica. He doesn't even play professionally, though we keep telling him he should.... Here he is at a harmonica festival with a pick-up band; these people have never played together before. Somebody happened to have a video camera.... The sound isn't great, just the microphone built into the camera, but the music ...
