Good Knife Damage?

So I hear all the time people's stories about a knife getting damaged in some way (usually cosmetically) and this making it easier for them to use the knife without being worried about messing it up. I actually have experienced this several times, once when I dropped a Kershaw Scallion tip down on concrete, breaking the tip off. I then reshaped the tip and use it all the time. So, who else has experienced this? Please share your stories, and/or pictures. Thanks!

breaking the tip off.

If I did that, I would cry. Glad it worked out for you.
I did use a harsh cleaning agent once on a nice (i.e. expensive) new shiny G10 scale that had a tiny black spot. It removed the tiny spot...and took off the shine. I sold the knife; took the loss. Cried.

You're right, I was very upset at the time, but then I realized it was no big deal, and that my Scallion now had a unique blade shape.

With a lot of knives the first thing I do is sharpen them. I get a feel for the steel/heat treat, I get to make it sharper than it started out, and it gets rid of the "new" by default.

I try my best to not damage any of my knives intentionally, but each one I buy, I buy to use so I go into it with the expectation of scratches and marks. I have broken 1 tip in my younger years when I thought knives made great prybars, it was a benchmade griltilian. And I have chipped a edge cutting open boxes that had the big shipping staples that I didn't see, an al mar sere 2000. As I get older I am getting smarter on how I use my knives. But they are all still tools and need to be used and enjoyed!!!

I just use them no matter what. I have used anything from a $60 griptillian to a $1,100 Rockstead...

They all show wear and tear at some point or another.

Good points. I use most of mine, and the ones that I mentioned I planned on using anyway, but them getting a little messed up took the newness away and made me want to go ahead and use them more.

I straight up batonned with my Rat 1 when I first started carrying knives. It was hilarious, I broke the tip, and deformed the liner, so I took it apart and put the liner in a vice grip and used plyers to bend it back. Which has now caused the blade to hug the side of the liner. But i still carry it more than my s30v blur, pm2, or zt 0350

If I am afraid to damage a knife, I just won't own it. A knife is a tool and occasionally they get damaged or break.

I had my Benchmade 940-1 with me one day, I used it to open a package and in the process I dropped it and it bounced off the curb and slid under the car.
My heart sank, so as I was retrieving my knife (swearing) my wife asked me what happened and I told her.
She told me did you buy it to carry or to collect I said to carry she told me to suck it up and get in the car.

I't's just like getting a new car. You are oh-so careful and over-protective until that first scratch/ding. Then it's 'meh'.

True Dat!

Many (most) of my knives came second hand, so I didn't have to worry about the first scratch, as it was already there. I don't really care that I didn't get to use it first because I saved some dough and don't have to worry about the new finish either. Win-Win.

I got a new truck once and a friend recommended that I throw a chain in the back for a few days so I wouldn't worry about scratching the bed anymore.

You can buy two of a knife and feel the same freedom.

That is what bed liners are for?

There is no such thing as "good knife damage". There is honest wear.

Sort of like a new car once the first scratch and ding are out of the way. I've used all and dropped most of my knives.

My 97 Toyota is still ticking at over 200K miles. So, yeah to "cheap". It wasn't cheap however when I first purchased it. I have a bed liner in it, but it came that way. I also used to use the heavy rubbermaid rubber bed liners that are easy to slide out if you need to. Stuff doesn't slide around easily on them.
