Good knife for a cop?

For what it's worth, I noticed a policeman wearing a Cold Steel Voyager (looked like a large model) in his back pocket and an LEO friend recommended the Voyager and Gunsite lines to me way beck when I was first getting into cutlery. While I'm not LEO, I've no complaints with the CS Voyager and Gunsite II I've owned and used - inexpensive, reliable, lightweight, usable, and slim. They're another option to consider :)

My Vic Classic is on my keys for the little things that the Classic is always good for.

Vic Rucksack as my all-around "tool knife". This is the one that sees all the work.

S&W auto (I know, I know) off hand for the very rare occasion when I need a one-handed open or to defend a gun grab.

In over 10 years of non-uniformed assignments this is what works for me.

Most of my family is "on the job" and I suggest a waved Delica or Endura by Spyderco. CL01 brought up the weak side argument and it is a great mention. The "waved" feature on those knives is a literal lifesaver when dealing with unsavory suspects. I have a Delica and love it. My "go to and do anything" knife. VG-10 steel and FRN handles that don't bother me a bit. Of course I also suggest that he have a SAK on hand for little jobs. I have a black engraved VIC Soldier and use it all the time. He could keep that on his cuff keys and at the price of both knives you could get both! SWEET! Best of luck.

I would check out the benchmade 930, and 940.
Or a spyderco police, military, or even the paramilitary.

I am not a policeman, nor have I ever been, don't aspire to be, and don't have any friends who are.

I have had to carry lots of stuff around before, and appreciate light weight things.

Honestly, I think a Leatherman Skeletol CX would be perfect- tough tool, w/pliers, screwdriver, and bottle opener/carabiner. Would be a great knife for everyday chores, and the pliers would probably come in pretty handy. 5 oz.

Now, if he's willing to carry more, and seriously wants a blade fo defense, than the Cold Steel Ti-Lite is only 3.5 oz.

Being an officer, I'm awfully fond of Benchmade's AutoStryker series! But there are a lot of others that are excellent and a lot cheaper such as the Spyderco Police model. Even the Boker Magnum auto's aren't bad knives for the money.,,,VWB.

If this makes any difference, I work for a federal law enforcement agency and after a polling of our Agents and lots of input, I just put together an order for One Hundred twenty (120) Spyderco Natives. I'm the office knife nut so I brought all of my knives to work, laid them out on the table and let everyone play with them. My huble little spyderco Native got the nod so Sal should be getting a big order any day now. It's a med. sized knife, very light, easy to open, easy on the uniform pocket and good for every day tasks. Just my .02..

Just a question about the Native: does it have steel liners?

Nope. Neither of the two, FRN handled Natives (S30V Native & VG-10 Native III) have steel liners, and the stainless steel handled Native (Native II) was recently discontinued. However, the Native 4, with carbon fiber handles, is getting closer to production, and that one is supposed to have steel liners.

I can't say enough good things about it, and it won't set you back more than $80!

I'm looking forward to that Native 4, although the price looks like it's going to be a lot higher than our favorite N1s and 3s :o

As much as I love the Delicas and Enduras, I don't know if I'd recommend them for tactical purposes (that's what we mean when we say "knife for a cop," right?). The Wave is absolutely flawless on the Delica and Endura, but I don't think the knife is that good for combat. I don't think the grip nor the blade shape is suitable.

I love how the Spyderco Wave isn't rough on the pocket like the CS Ti-Lite's copy is. I ruined a pocket seam today practicing (at least I made sure I wore pants I didn't care about). But yeah, Spyderco's Wave is a smooth system. They ought to implement it on more knives, like maybe the Civilian. And maybe even the Police, just for the hell of it haha

Well, THG, it depends on what exactly you mean when you say "tactical purposes." If it's combat/self-defense you're thinking of, that is not what I think of when I hear "knife for a cop." When someone asks about a "knife for a cop," I think of a strong, sturdy knife, capable of quick deployment under hectic conditions. I don't necessarily jump to the conclusion that the knife being requested should serve first and foremost as a weapon, though it should be able to serve in that role in the extremely rare instance that everything goes to hell and it is the only option available.

The Spyderco waved Endura 4 makes an excellent self-defense knife, if that's what you're asking.

Alright, that's exactly what I was asking. If the first priority is not combat, then I think the Endura 4 Wave is a great choice. If I had the money, I'd get my Delica 4 Wave a big brother; the Spyderco wave implementation is just great :D

Benchmade's Black class knives were designed specifically with law enforcement in mind. Any from that range would make a fine choice

When I was a Patrol officer, I carried a Blade-Tech MLEK lite in my right front pocket, a puma folder in a hidden pocket on my vest, a Mantis MU-3 picker as my neck knife. I also carried any of a number of my Spyderco collection, or my Strider AR(which I foolishly traded.) I currently have an Emerson
CQC-7A , a Strider SMF tanto, a James Coogler custom folder (Harrissi), a Mantis MT-4ti, and several Spydercos including a discontinued D'Allara, and Kris. I would suggest figuring out the cost factor and going from there.
