I'm thinking of purchasiung one of my closest friends a knife. she is by no means a girly girl, so pink handles and small blades aren't what i'm looking for.

she's specified that all she wants is something smaller, under 3", and something wit a smoother handle.

ive been eyeing a custom engraved kershaw leek on ebay... any other suggestions?

Delica. If you want smooth, there's the SS Delica.

What's the budget like?

My GF edc's a waved Delica at work, and a waved Endura when she works the late shift. A Strider PT is for her Maxped.

The Spyderco Centofante III is a great small folder with a 3" VG-10 blade, and smooth FRN handle.

My favorite "in town" EDC.

Listen to what TKC says. She is knowledgeable about this subject in particular, as well as knives in general.

If she wants a clip how about a Kershaw Scallion Frame Lock. If she does not want a clip then how about a Fallkniven U2? There are some other good ones to pick from like the A G Russell Featherlite folder but it does have a 3 inch blade. There is the Blade-Tech Mouse, Spyderco Cricket, Spyderco Kiwi, just to name a few others. Some of these have a clip and some dont. The A G Russell is about the same size as the Leek and they make it with a stainless handle if you dont want FRN. GOOD LUCK! Kevin

The first one I thought of was a CRK Mnandi, but that might be way out of the price range you're thinking of.

the kershaw "vapor" has pretty smooth handles and a 3 inch blade. goes for 20 bucks at wal-mart. good for either edc or camping.

I realize that you are probably trying to do this as a surprise, but my best bit of advice is to let her choose! She may very well surprise you. I realize that my tastes are not necessarily general for women, but I love G-10 and my favorite EDC is my ATR. As most everyone here knows, a knife is a very personal choice. If it's something you want her to actually carry on her, she has to figure out what her preferences are and then choose from there. In the end, she'll get something that she's comfortable with and actually carry it, in addition to having a really great friend.

A Case Peanut would fit the under 3" criteria and there are plenty of aesthetically pleasing and smooth handle materials. Like others have said though, a little more information would be helpful; i.e. intended use, price range, locking/opening mechanism preferences, etc.

I just bought the Boker Stellar II for my wife.

She loves it. Shiny shiny!

I think the leek would be a great knife for a girl. It should absolutely be an a/o knife. Most of the girls I know don't want to mess up their fingernails opening a knife.
