My wife and I are going to Europe next spring, and I like to pick up a souvenir knife when I travel. My question is, does anyone know a good fun knife shop in Paris and/ or Edinburgh? I should like to pick up something reflecting local culture in each place. already know I'd like to get a sgian dubh in Scotland, unsure what I'd like to get in France. Any suggestions?

I don't know of any shops but I have seen photos here on Bfs of Opinel dealers set up in open-air/Farmer's Markets. In France the pocketknife is imbedded in their culture, I bet you will find Opinel and Laguiole all over.

While I can't help you with specific shops, If I were in France I'd try to track down a nice, ideally handmade laguiole. Very French in it's origin, history and manufacture; it would make a nice souvenir.

a nice handmade Languiole would be perfect. just trying to find a place that would carry some quality stuff, not made for tourists junk.

There are a few knife shops in and around Paris, some good some not so much. Most of it is tourist nonsense knives but you will see many French classics as well. As for Edinburgh you will see nothing of note and I know, I grew up there and still call it home. :p If you really want a Sgian Dubh do not buy it in a "kilt shop" in the city of Edinburgh on "Princess Street" the "Royal Mile" or the like, it will be vastly over priced, rubbish or both. You can try some of the antique or "brick a brack" shops for an older one, that would be my suggestion. If you have a few days to play with you could get yourself up north to Perthshire for the day and have a look there as well. I don't know if you're driving or bus/training it, but places like Dunkled and Birnam are easy to get to really worth a visit just on their own merit, Perthshire is beautiful. :)

^^^ Good call. A trip up north is always nice. Is he the guy that was/is next to the old glass blowing shop ?

In Paris I would definitely recommend Courty et Fils at 44 rue de Petit Champs. I stumbled across them this summer and they have a great selection and great service! They have a fantastic display board in the window showing all of the regional knives of France and a great selection of them in stock. Definitely recommend a le Thiers as a great regional knife - check out Gary W Graley's posts about them or take a look at this post

Have a great trip!

Hi Haze if you are asking about Rab, then no, he lives in an old coverted mill basically in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks all for your replies. Wish I could afford a Rab Gordon blade, those look beautiful. Will have to check out MacDonald Amoury and
Courty et Fils.
