My buddy got a browning crowell barker and I like it alot, and my old pack knife is junk, so I'm looking for a new large survival/camp knife. Something in the 9"+ blade length. I like flat ground, I don't mind simple 1095/5160/carbon steels. I know about the trail master, the browning, the beckers, but are there some brands models I'm missing?

ESEE Junglas or Becker BK9 would be my contribution to this thread...

I like the Esse Junglus, but the handle feels bad to me. too big. Like chunky. But I like th rest of th knife. :thumbdn:

I just got a blade from Steve Randall at KSR Blades, he does great things with large knives.

Ontario has the RTAK which is similar to the Junglas and might have a more comfortable grip to you, but almost everyone likes the Junglas better. Ontario has some other knives worth looking at, too. Maybe something from Bark River or Fallkniven would work, too? There's also a Spyderco that was recently discontinued and can be had for low prices. I forget what it was, but it was a large recurve survival blade like you want.

Don't forget about the Ka-Bar Cutlass machete. It's same length as the Junglas and BK9. It's not as thick, but not the same grind. It's flat till the hollow ground edge starts. Best thing is, it's only $40. Or, you could go even cheaper, with the Ontario Cutlass machete it's 12" and only $20. You would have to put an edge on it, maybe modify or replace the handle, and get a sheath. But, it's a wood chopper for sure.

Hi gixxer1237 -

How about your own design?

Talk to Stomper, his forum is in the makers area here at BF.

In fact, Stomper has a competition going right now - you draw up your design and enter it, and then there will be a vote.

The winner will get his knife hand-made by Stomper for free!

If you don't win, you can still have Stomper make your knife, or buy one if his proven designs.

I have one of his Camp/Survival kits, that include the Camp/Survival knife, plus a sheath that has a piggy-back pouch that will accommodate a Victorinox Farmer. This kit makes a great camping combo.

Here are some pictures of my kit - the knife is a little shorter than you are looking for, but Stomper can alter any design, his motto is "Your design or mine!".

If you are persistent(& lucky) you may pick up a RD-9 made by Justin on the secondary market. Dollar for dollar they are the toughest knives I have ever used.
