Good luck, Mike...

Lorien, I know it's your design and you want Kris style blade. I tell you what it would be an awesome dagger with a straight blade. Love the handle and guard design !

it's in Mike Deibert's hands, now. It will be interesting to see how he approaches this project, if at all. There is no obligation for him to follow it, or even to build the knife at all. We just want to work on something :)

At any rate, it was a challenging design, and the first of this style I've attempted. This thread has elicited some excellent feedback that will certainly find voice in the next try.

I have seen that Fuegen knife before and I like it. A lot. I wish I owned it. It is Dali-esque - and that is a good thing. A knife version of The Persistence of Time which I have always liked.

I like Lorien's blade shape too, but not nearly as much.

And - no offense, Stuart - I do not care at all for the Kris blade that you posted.

DSFDF!

Anyway, we have all seen a zillion daggers with straight blades. Nothing different or remarkable about yet another dagger with a straight blade. Why do that again? I like it when knives push the envelope. I own one of Mike's knives, and if he chooses to do so I would love to see him tackle something as challenging as this.

I received this assignment just a few days ago. I'm still processing it but all-in-all I'm super excited about it. I know I'm under no obligation to accept this but there's something about a challenge that (for me) is difficult to turn down. This is probably a design that I would never make on my own but that's also part of the fun.
Currently I'm in the States and far away from my shop. I'll return to Nicaragua in early December. My plan is to start this project when I have some forseeable time at hand but I can make no promises when that will be. I will also try my best to make this a Work In Progress for those interested. I will admit that many of the details in this design will be new to me. This will make progress slower than normal but it will also make it very interesting.
I've only been able to make one billet of "feather" damascus until now and that was under the watchful eye of David "the man" Lisch. I hope I can do him proud in what I come up with on my own.
Stay tuned and hopefully I'll be able to get something started before the new year. Lorien, this is a very cool project and I'm excited to accept the challenge. I'm sure we'll be talking more details as thoughts and questions come to my mind. From now until I get back into my shop I'll be going over this project in my head. I've already made a few of the components in my mind a few times. Visualization comes in handy for me.
Thanks to all for your comments and thoughts, I hope this thread is enjoyable for all.

No offense taken. I don't like it either other than the symmetry of how the curves descend to the point. I never thought of the melting Fuegen as a good thing though.. hmm... I think the photo angle is confusing the overall look but anyway..

I just thought that the curves in Lorien's needed a little tweaking as I found it slightly uncommitted to the design idea being so gentle and slightly undecided in the subtle lack of symmetry. Lots of potential though.
Either way it's going to be an extremely ambitious project, one I very much look forward to seeing unfolding.

Thanks for chiming in, Mike! I hope you have fun with this pattern :)

I agree with all of this 100%!

While I'm not a huge fan of the Kris they're always sickly fascinating. There's a multitude of straight daggers out there anyhow, I can't wait to see this progress.

I would disagree with Jon on the skill level involved in this grind, it's going to be crazy hard to pull off, far more than a traditional dagger grind.
Haley is right. That's exactly what I thought, too. Dagger grinds are hard enough--add a Kris grind and the complexity goes cubic... ;)

Staying posted.

I just conceived some mathematics to help me design the next kris. Gonna have to work it out on paper, but my brain says it should work lol.
It'll be awhile before I try a kris again, probably after this one gets made. Got another iron in the fire that is tres exciting!

I am reminded that it has been a little more than a year . . .

Did this knife ever get made? If so, can Mike or Lorien or anyone else who has taken any pictures of it post a pic or three?

Yes, I need to apologize to Lorien. I really intended for this to happen about 8 months ago but life happened first. I still plan on attempting this beauty but Im still transitioning my family back to the States after 13 years of living in Nicaragua. We arrived in Alabama back in June and after two months of home remodeling I got to work on my shop and have only now started producing knives. This might have to be something that I work on little by little. My apologizes and thanks for the reminder!
