Good Machete?

i can't remember what brand i have, i got 'em when a local hardware store was closing. the handles are molded on. the only one i can get to at the moment is the one with the guard, but i had to reprofile the handle with a sanding drum on the dremel. the shape was horrible, blocky and square. now it's much more ergo and has a nice texture.

IIRC the handles without the guard are very nice shapes and also available in orange.

perhaps someone else will know the brand without my digging out one with an unmodified handle.

I love my lite, great little machete and the handle is worth the price. You can grab Excellent condors for around $30 if you look around, and that's my next favorite. The Condor Viking is pricy at 70 bucks or so, but the thing is a freaking monster.

I've got several Ontarios from 12" to 22", but since I started getting condors, they dont see much work. I sharpen those with a dremel or belt sander, The condors/lite with ceramic stones.

I'm going to guess Meyerco or Ontario.

don't think so, because i'm familiar with both those brands and yet i can't remember what brand the ones i have are,,, but don't think it's either of them.

i can't find the ones in the garage that are still in the cardboard sleeves,,, but i'm recovering from eye surgery and have to look at the screen thru a magnifier to tweak the focus, when i try doing that on anything like my garage i get dizzy quick.

thought it was two names with an ampersand (&) between them... but i can;t be sure until i find 'em. grrr.

fwiw, i like Alfredo's Parang designs.

I have the ESEE Lite I havn't tried yet. Off the rack sharpness aside, is a Condor or Tram "better" in some ways than an Ontario. I like the thickness of the Ontario but I havn't done any type of chop off yet. I had planned on getting a Tram but I didn't like the feel of the handles of the Condors I saw at Blade. I have had my Ontarios for 20 years but havn't used them much.

Obviously with over 6,000 posts you don't get out enough to work a machete anyway. :p

You don't know 42 very well, do you? I'm pretty sure he sleeps with a machete in his hand. :D

Good, inexepensive machetes? Imacasa. Imacasa's machetes make Tramontinas look like trash by comparison. They're so, so good.

I agree with most. A Tramontina will be good, if you sharpen it up. However, I would go toward Condor, as it comes with an edge and a decent grip already. Great machetes for the money.

My guess is Hansa, their machetes have overmolded handles that come in both orange and black. I haven't heard any reviews on them yet-but I'm interested, if anyone has any experience. Belloto as well.

Almost! My fiancee keeps her Condor Hogsticker under the bed. :D :D :D

I am going to try some Condor and Marbles machetes next but I really like my cold steel barong. It came pretty sharp and stayed sharp enough for me to cut vines and branches for 6 hours. I just sharpen it with a fine file and it gets sharp enough for my needs. It was under $20 and has a very comfortable ribbed rubber handle.

I haven't used one but I have heard some good things about the Cold Steel Heavy Machete. They're just a little over $12 at knifecenter. Looks like it would be a pretty good one for setting up shelters and using in confined spaces.
