Good (mostly) & Bad - Case Warranty

I recently bought a Case Whittler from a forum member NIB. Nice deal, very happy with it. But when I got it, I found the small clip darn near impossible to open. Working the blade over time, cleaning it, using graphite lube, nothing seemed to make it even a little better and that blade was just not usable as it was. I'm fairly tolerant about nail breakers and have had success improving them when I have encountered them in the past. No such luck this time. But this was a very nice Whittler so I contacted Case.

They had me send it in, which I did. On my end I packaged it up nice with the original box and plenty of bubble wrap inside a second box and sent it off. About 4 weeks later I got it back. Nicely fixed with the small clip now quite functional. Very pleased with the work. Case warranty gets a  for the repair. Very happy with the way the knife was when it was returned. The warranty process was positive and relatively painless.

Now for the bad...
I am a stickler about my boxes. I keep them all and keep them in very good condition. I know not everyone feels the same, but to me the box is a part of the overall product. If I buy a knife I (almost) always expect a box in the same condition as the knife. A NIB knife should come with a new condition box. But when Case returned the knife, they just stuck the knife in its box in an unprotected envelope and the box arrived squashed, bent and torn. Not too happy about that especially since I took the time to mention in my included note that the box was important to me.

Warranty work from Buck included the knife and box being returned to me in a second box, well protected. Same with warranty work sent to GEC. But not so with Case. (Very pleased with the warranty work done by both Buck and GEC, BTW. Nice work.)

Moral of the story - if you send a knife to Case for warranty work, expect a good job, but don't send the knife in its original box if that box is important to you. Next time, I'll wrap it in cardboard and keep the original box at home safe and sound.

FWIW.

Bummer man. I too keep my boxes and like them. I believe Benchmade specifically asks for warranty knives to not be sent in their box as they have a hard time keeping track of them (along with the drawstring bag).

For warranty, I send the knife wrapped in bubble wrap along with the warranty form/note that specifies exactly what I want done, and what I don't.

Glad to hear it got back to you in serviceable condition.

Kershaw also requests that boxes not be sent unless you don't want them returned. I like to keep them too. Good to know the actual work was done right. At least you can enjoy using the knife now.

Some companies are willing to send you a correctly marked box for your knife if you ask them.
I have heard of Benchmade and KAI doing that and I have dealt with Case in the past and they are great folks.
Hopefully they can help you.

I've sent a few back to Case and feel they have one of the best warranty departments out there.

The last one I sent back was a large Copperlock(yellow/CV). The lock was very stiff, but it came as smooth as a custom knife.
I'm not sure what they did, but they did an amazing job.

I think the boxes came back fine, but I don't really remember since I don't worry about a box on a knife I will use.
Sorry they messed up the box, and hope its one you plan to use instead of one for collection only.
If you plan to use it the value won't be hurt from the box being messed up a bit.

Good idea. One of those duh moments, but I didn't think about the obvious. I'll contact 'em. Thanks. :)

It is definitely a user, but I like to keep the boxes just because I like them. I rarely sell knives, so value isn't really an issue in this case. I do have a very few that are for investment purposes or that I don't like and plan to sell, but that isn't the case (pun intended :D ) with this knife. People have different perspectives on the boxes, but for me they are part and parcel of the whole package when you buy a knife. I keep them safely stored unless a knife is in one. So, not really a matter of value, but a matter of completeness (yeah, OK, maybe a am a little OCD...).
