Last night, after visiting inlaws, we came home to find our very geriatric german shepherd in dire need to be put down. I am thankful that I was able to get ahold of our vet, as I trust him, but was heartbroken that I was right. His heart and kidneys were shutting down, and it was for the best. The PITA (said VERY affectionatly) was pushing 14 years old.

When he was in his "prime" I did trust my family to be in his protection.

As this was an after office hours appointment, no staff there, I participated in a couple of "post" activities that I am sure most don't even know about. Made it it all the rougher.

Bad night for me,

Good Night Old Friend!

Matt

:( Sorry for the loss, but you done the right thing by the animal! Take solace in knowing he is no longer in pain.

Not trying to be a moron but rescue animals are every where looking for a loving home and a person to befriend. So if its in you get you/family a new best friend when the time is right.

God bless you and your pets!!

Been there myself, Matt, several times... it's never easy. :(

For a Friend…

My eyes are glassy and filled with tears.
For the Lord has taken you back, it appears.
We have helped each other confront our fears.
You will be in my thoughts and heart for many years.

I am so very sorry for your loss. That is always hard and heart breaking, even when it IS the RIGHT thing to do. I am going to include a poem that HAS helped me through times like this, and I hope it helps you.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Sorry to hear about your friend. Its not an easy thing to do, but when you care about them, its the best thing to do.

We went through that awhile back with our 15 year old Lab. She loved people, but hated going to the vet. We didn't want her last hours to be stressed out going to the vets office, so we had the vet come to our house to put her down.

When you have them that long, it really is losing a part of your family.

sorry bro,German shepherds are our dogs here, they are super but old age and hip problems are killer................

So sorry to hear that, always sad to loose your pets/friends,been there too many times:(Regards Butch

Thanks much for the comfort. I didn't shed a tear last night, but had to compose myself to post this. OUCH!!!! Hurts losing part of the family.

T.K.C, your post made me loose it. Thanks.

reading that after losing a loyal friend of that many years is never an easy task...just avoid the movie marley and me for the next year or two, I watched that one a few months back after putting my dog of 13 years down and was a wreck.

Its funny how much apart of the family they become.

I mourn with you, and it makes me think about my 1 yr. old lab, that one day, I will be going through the same thing. My wife sometimes feels that my dog is the only member of our family that can make me smile sometimes, which may be true.

i know man it hurts. we had to put down our 15 year old shepherds. a little later we had gotten two pomeranians from my dying grandpa. he had cancer and had to the hospital. he trusted us with the care of his two poms. about a year ago we were walking the dogs and got jumped by a pitbull. he killed the smallest one outright and wounded the other one so bad that he had to be put down. the anger is that the owners never stepped forward and that i have the feeling that i let my grandpa down.

Dude... I am sorry to hear that. Where in god's name was your knife at the time?

Smoke and prayers up for your friend. We have three Weimaraners who have adopted my wife and I as members of their pack. I dread the day when any of them will need me to be very strong and make hard decisions.
