Good pizza in NYC?

First post by Randallflag hit the best one's I know of - 20 plus years in NYC.

Since some of you seem to be afficianados - anyone remember St. Marks Pizza [3rd and St. Marks] was always my favorite.

Up in the Bronx you can't swing a dead cat without getting a great pie - Don't remember the name but Grand Concourse by Yates Ave. had top notch pizza. Can't comment on Brooklyn - would agree with the gentleman who gave New Haven props.

As a former New Yorker i miss the pizza but it is the pastrami that I really dream about - in midtown give the Stage or Carnegie a try - Wolf's or 2nd Ave downtown.

Good eating!

You need to go on a pizza tour. Theres a guy who does pizza tours all over NYC. I saw him on a morning national news broadcast. It looked pretty cool. Everyone looked like they were truly enjoying themselves. Google nyc pizza tours. Have fun.

I think he may mean the Slice of Brooklyn Pizza Tour. Which just so happens to take you to Grimaldi's and Spumoni Gardens, both which have been mentioned. On the tour it'll cost you $75 a head, and you'll be on a bus for most of 4 1/2 hours. Me, I'd rather get on the subway for $2.

If you're looking Italian food, I've got to recommend two places.

First, Il Corallo Trattoria, on Prince Street. They have the biggest and most varied pasta menu I've ever seen. Everything is good, and nothing is expensive. "White tablecloth" atmosphere. It gets a few bad reviews because people come with an attitude, and get an attitude right back, in true New York Italian style. But if you show up with respect, you'll get a really great meal.

Second, Max (not Max's) in the East Village. Noisy, crowded, dark wood, no tablecloths, weird music, lots of wine, open garden, very hip. Small menu of family recipes. They exist for the love of the food they make. I'm not sure they make a dime, but they make the best lasagna I've ever had in my life. I'll say no more.

Both of these places have their menus listed on menupages.com, good site if you're looking for food in New York.

Exactly.

I'm really not a big fan of the ultra thin, oven burnt crusts of some of the trendier pizza places. I'm also not crazy about the deep dish Chicago style pizza, it's not bad it's just not what I grew up with. The thicker bread crust of a good Sicilian pie is very satisfying. Spumoni Gardens was walking distance from where I went to High School, so it was very much a part of growing up for me.

OK. There was a place in Kent, Ohio that was called Singin' Sam's. Thick crust, in which I assume was the Sicilian style. Good stuff. But what did a 12 year old now about good pizza though?

Brings back memories.

There's no shortage of great Pizza in Manhattan, but two of the Best in the World are in Brooklyn. Grimaldi's was mentioned before, but my vote goes to Spumoni Gardens.

Take the N train to W 8th St-Ave U

Walk over to 86th Street and see where they filmed the chase scene from "The French Connection".
Walk up 86th Street and retrace John Travolta's steps from "Saturday Night Fever".

I' ll have to second Phils choices. Grimaldi has good stuff. Great scenery at nearby Brooklyn Bridge. Very close to the Brooklyn Heights Promenade. Both offer a spectacular view of the Manhattan skyline right across the river. Only a few blocks away was another scene shot for "The French Conection", night time stakeout. :)

Spumoni Gardens on 86 St. can pump out Sicilian pies (squares) like no other pizza joint I' ve seen. They are light, fluffy and crispy. Just the way they' re suppose to be. :)

Have fun during your stay.

Here's another little review of Spumoni Gardens.

My wife who spent many years working down near Little Italy says that Arturo's was the place down there, but still thinks Spumoni Gardens has the edge.

Is it possible to get Pizza'd out? I wonder what my wife is going to think of eating Pizza/Italian for 3 days?

Another odd question. I am a big Godfather Saga fan. Was part of the story filmed in NY or any of the Boroughs? Anything worth seeing?

No, it is not possible to get Pizza'd out, unless you let Torz pick your pizza places.

Hmmmm, Godfather locations...
This should keep you busy for a while.

There's been quite a few other movies filmed in NYC...

What other types of food do you like? I work in the area of Greenwich Village, Tribeca, SoHo....might be able to give you some decent suggestions around there.

I like Chinese, but its not something my wife likes. I love Sushi, anything that is 'fish' and 'raw', throw it on a plate and I will eat it. If it tastes bad, I'll just use more sauce or more wasabi. Wifes likes sushi as well. I like BBQ as well. I am not big on greek or indian food. I am from Ohio, and those places didn't exist around me when I was young (nor where I live now, at least none that I know of).

Corned beef is another favorite. I'm gonna have a hard time putting down $20 for a sandwich though. But I will.

I'm going to think about some of the places I know downtown for good eats and pick the brains of some other guys that have been working in the city for years and try to get you a nice list. Sorry for the run on sentence...

In the 80's I used to go to Bella pizza near Washington square park. I loved it. A huge slice for a $1.50. Those were the days.

Also, Ginos in Bronxville has awesome sicillian pizzas.

Miss it.
