Good place to look for decent used equipment?

Greetings, I'm new here but I've got a question already.

I've been saving up for a while to invest in some metal shop tools. Such as a belt sander, buffer, metal bandsaw, metal lathe for starters. Incidentally I have a big milling machine, and 40" heat treat oven. I've got some knowledge in making knives and swords and am looking to add weapons to my business offerings.
But before I start buying new gear I wanted to check around to see if I could find some reasonable priced used equipment. Or maybe someone out there is looking to get out of knife making and I can get a good starting kit. I'm in no big rush but the first thing I'm looking for is a belt grinder/sander and I'm kind of set on the Burr King 260-272 with 72" belt. Preferably with variable speed and 1.5 or 2HP.

Anyone know where I might be able to get some leads on this? Or maybe someone here might have something?

Thanks in advance.

Samuel

Hi,

As a machinist, I will tell you the availability and cost of used equipment is highly variable depending on your location.

As an example, were I live, most used machines are long past being good boat anchors. Or if still in fair to good shape, are priced as much or more than new. And it's seldom worth the money or effort to ship long distances for used machines.

If you have patience, then you could maybe find that deal locally. But I suspect, you will have to look more to new.

Good Luck!!!,
dalee

Ebay & Craigslist. Prepare to pay freight or travel and haul. You can save searches on Ebay with a mileage limit, so if something turns up on your side of the Rockies....

I'll second that. Keep an eye on eBay and save searches with mileage in mind. I'll often look a very long time before buying anything.

Frustrated knifemakers seem to be a good source:D

I bought my Burr King off of eBay for a very very very nice price and the guy threw in 3 contact wheels and about 130 belts. His brother in law had died and he wound up with the gear. Noone wanted to buy a high dollar item from someone with a "0" next to their name.... their loss.

I've only seen 1 other Burr King on there since then. Good luck you'lll get a great piece of gear. My main question is why not get a KMG because it'll probably work out to the same price.

I agree about ebay and craigslist. Also agree about the KMG or a BIII. There are others to be had, but those are the two most common amongst knife makers.

I've said this before, but the only person I know who has a burr-king told me it was "nice, but overrated and expensive". Don't have any personal experience with one though.

YOUR THE ONE THAT GOT THAT?
I was watching that and I would have bid if it were closer, you got a great deal, were the belts any good?

hah... I think about 5 months ago, give or take, there was this amazing line of items from someone. They had the burr king, big metal band saw, baldor buffer, and a lathe, and a bunch of other stuff. Everything sold for an amazing price but I simply didn't have the cash at the time. I try not to think about it... Still makes me ill.

My reasoning for wanting the burr king is because I've used the particular 272 model and it seemed like a good machine. Easy to use, quick belt changing, smooth operation. That said, I have no experience in testing the other machines so I'll bow to my superiors in this and listen to any advice. I think I'll post a new thread actually and ask for some more opinions.
Thanks all
