Good morning.

Embarrassing, but unfortunately I know very little about what's worth buying - too much time on folders.
The main usage would be chopping trees and bushes down, so something large would be preferable.

Broken several lower quality fixed blades on trees; usually the tang fails due to the impact.
It will need to be well built.

Thanks. :)

I have a Hen an Rooster Bowie that I bought for 100.00 on a Smky Mtn trip and I love it. Full tang, bone handle and German steel.

Budget? We talking basic bushcraft/shelter building type tree falling scenarios?

Budget will dictate a lot of your answers.

Without knowing how much you want to spend and you stating you have tried the lesser expensive models, I would say go all the way to the top and get a Busse FBM or one of the many various models...If you want a Knife rather than an Axe then the FBM fills the bill very well.

I have a Mineral Mountain Hatchet works bowie that takes a beating. An old western 49 bowie and a kukri that works great.

Where can potential busse buyers go for the FBM, other than BladeForum Exchange?

If you're looking for a budget knife (~50$) check out:

Onrario SP5/SP10
Kabar Large Heavy Bowie
Coldsteel trailmaster in carbon steel (this one is around 70-80$)

The next step up would be something like a Fallkniven A2 wilderness knife, for around 200$

Then as baba mentioned, the best money can buy is a Busse FBM.

Bark River Golok Is The Way To Go!!

Check out the makers section here on BF! I bet you CAN get a custom one for the price that you want.

Yeah, look at what custom makers have to offer here on the forums first. Then, I would go to Bark River.......or Busse....or Swamp Rat......or Scrap yard knives.....there are a plethora of choices!

also keep an eye out for Scrap Yard Dog Father. There is one on the Busse exchange for 200 right now, and that would be a great chopper, and a reasonable price too.

Hard use my vote goes to MMHW or Busse
Here is a MMHW Combat bowie with his White river handle
that Ted made for me.

check out scrapyard knives for a practically indestrucable knife at a decent price.i just ordered one myself.

The Best Bowie for the described uses is a good quality hatchet. The Fiskars are a great choice for the price, Gransfors are tops.

As much as I love the bowie grind, it is not the best chopper. Bussie makes some nice ones. I also like Bill Siegle's knives. He makes some great chopping knifes. Siegleknives

The Cold Steel Laredo Bowie in SK-5 is a bargain a $120. Though if what you want is a beater knife to hack at trees, you may considrer buying a machete. I like the Gerber Gator for $20.
