Good Quality Hiking Staff?

This thread made me think...
I'm building a nice hiking staff using an old hockey stick.
Laminated construction. lightweight and very strong!!
plus, the fiberglass reinforced bottom will last a lot longer than just the wood against the ground, rocks, etc.
I'll take pictures when I'm done.
I love recycling!

I've got some suitable wood in my basement shop. Maybe a nice black walnut one that was from some trees that my parents had taken out of their yard. I scooped up tons of this wood, had it sawn into lumber and I dried it for several years. I should make one for my Dad too.

I've also got a nice exotics like cocobolo, Honduran rosewood, wenge, ziricote, chechen, bubinga and goncalo alves. The goncalo alves is very hard, dense and unassuming in looks. Some of the others might be garish.

I was also thinking of drilling a hole in the tip for an old carbide router bit and a dab of epoxy. It sure would help take some wear and tear better than the bare wood.

I guess I'm on the other end of the 'stick'. I like a 6 foot piece of bamboo that I get from Walmart. I have been working on a prototype (to please me ) using bamboo. On the bottom there is a hole drilled that I can insert a piece of 1/4-20 threaded rod crosswise. I use this to hook between trunk and branch of saplings, to pull down for lifting pole snares. Also to pull down ripe fruit branches (cherry, serviceberry, etc.) In the winter, I can hang it up in the branches and use it to hang packs, clothes, etc. out of the snow, away from the wet ground. It's still a work in progress.

Extra points for the sheer Canadian-ness of your project!

All the best,

Hector, where do you get a hockey stick in Brazil? I used to use a broken hockey stick as a walking stick when I was a kid. Plenty of them over the boards at the rink

If price is no object, for a nearly unbreakable carbon fiber staff, see:

It's an excellent, versatile hiking staff. Well-made, only ~9 oz for the basic 54" sectional model, great customer service, too. But, again, probably several times more than what most folks may be willing to spend. FYI.
