Today was a weird day for me. I'm a stay at home Mom for the time being, with a 3 year old and a 5 year old. My daughter begins Kindergarten in a couple of weeks and my son will be going to preschool twice a week for a few hours a day. This week they both attended the same summer camp at church. So, from 9am-1pm four days this week the unthinkable happened - I was alone! It kind of scared me. I haven't been alone and childless more than a handful of times in the last few years. If you have kids you understand this - you are never alone. It seems like someone is always with you. This small detail makes shopping just a little more difficult, especially when it involves sharp objects. So, today I treated myself to a little excursion. I visited a little knife shop almost an hour away and chatted with the owner while I browsed his knives uninterrupted. He only carries Case, Buck and a few others in limited numbers, but he is a pleasure to talk with and I enjoy hearing his stories. Today I wanted to get a case stockman. I've been eyeing the stockman pattern for awhile, and have a small one with a pen blade, but haven't found a smaller one with both a sheepsfoot and spey that tripped my trigger, so I settled for the 6318 pattern. I knew I could order one, but this was more fun. He showed me the ones he had in the Case 6318 pattern and I chose one. Then I just looked and handled some of the knives he had - patterns I have read about but never seen in person. And it was a pure joy, as was the conversation with a man who had a true passion for knives and socializing. We talked about some of the older Case knives he had acquired from a local estate - he purchased part of them and his portion was more than 3000 knives. That was more than two years ago and he still had a few lying in his display cases. At any rate, it was a lot of fun. When I got ready to pay, he gave me a small discount, polished the CV blades with a Sunshine cloth and meticulously rewrapped the knife in the original paper, being careful to fold the paper just so. I stayed and chatted a few minutes longer and then made my exit to return to the world of "Mommy, where are you?" "Mommy, can I have
" "Mommy, Riley hit me!" And on and on it goes
But today was a good day and will only get better as I hug on those little ones.
