Today was a weird day for me. I'm a stay at home Mom for the time being, with a 3 year old and a 5 year old. My daughter begins Kindergarten in a couple of weeks and my son will be going to preschool twice a week for a few hours a day. This week they both attended the same summer camp at church. So, from 9am-1pm four days this week the unthinkable happened - I was alone! It kind of scared me. I haven't been alone and childless more than a handful of times in the last few years. If you have kids you understand this - you are never alone. It seems like someone is always with you. This small detail makes shopping just a little more difficult, especially when it involves sharp objects. So, today I treated myself to a little excursion. I visited a little knife shop almost an hour away and chatted with the owner while I browsed his knives uninterrupted. He only carries Case, Buck and a few others in limited numbers, but he is a pleasure to talk with and I enjoy hearing his stories. Today I wanted to get a case stockman. I've been eyeing the stockman pattern for awhile, and have a small one with a pen blade, but haven't found a smaller one with both a sheepsfoot and spey that tripped my trigger, so I settled for the 6318 pattern. I knew I could order one, but this was more fun. He showed me the ones he had in the Case 6318 pattern and I chose one. Then I just looked and handled some of the knives he had - patterns I have read about but never seen in person. And it was a pure joy, as was the conversation with a man who had a true passion for knives and socializing. We talked about some of the older Case knives he had acquired from a local estate - he purchased part of them and his portion was more than 3000 knives. That was more than two years ago and he still had a few lying in his display cases. At any rate, it was a lot of fun. When I got ready to pay, he gave me a small discount, polished the CV blades with a Sunshine cloth and meticulously rewrapped the knife in the original paper, being careful to fold the paper just so. I stayed and chatted a few minutes longer and then made my exit to return to the world of "Mommy, where are you?" "Mommy, can I have…" "Mommy, Riley hit me!" And on and on it goes…:) But today was a good day and will only get better as I hug on those little ones.

Here she is before the work begins…

Well my kids are in their twenties , so now it's "dad can I borrow your car"? , " I like this Michael Kors Bag, but I can't afford it, can you loan me some money?"
Enjoy them while they're young , they grow up fast.

Anyway the Case Stockman is a great pattern ( and amber bone is very nice) , I have a few medium and large ones. I like having 3 blades in a folding knife.

Nice account. It's always good to get a break from the daily reality and move into your own special playtime.

Amber Bone is indeed a great choice, but, what work will you be doing on that Med Stockman?? immediate patina perhaps....

Regards, Will

Congrats on the Great looking knife & great insight on your day. This helps me relate to some things that go on with my family. My wife is also a stay at home mother (two daughters 4 & 7). Her day off purchase may be shoes/clothes/purse but, she has expressed many of the same feelings you described.

Perhaps - but first I'm just going to cut some stuff up! That sounds pretty fun - oh wait - I'm helping with Bible school tonight - no cutting until later. Don't want to scare the children.

Sometimes it is good to know you are not alone. Not much of a purse girl - surprise! - but I do like shoes and clothes, so maybe on my next trip!

Jone, You chose very well by picking a 6318 - one of the best knives Case makes - blending a trim package with a lot of good blade steel and choice. Glad you also had such an enjoyable time in picking out your knife - that is the very reason I prefer to buy in person - the camaraderie of being around Knife Folks! OH

It's been a long time but I certainly remember those precious few moments alone. I was a single parent for a few years with a 2 & 3 year old. My kids are in their 40's now but I would give anything to have those days back again. The years really do fly by.
That is a great knife you have there. Enjoy it for a long time. Thanks for sharing.
Bob

Congrats on your Mommy time trip, sounds like time well spent with a fellow knife nut and a great acquisition to show for it all!

I'd love to be able to take a drive to the nearest knife shop. For me, that would require a couple of hours on a ferry first. Beautiful knife that, I've been looking at the 44 pattern myself, I like a squared bolster on a serpentine frame.

It was nice to read your little tale, put a smile on my face :)

Jennifer, that's a great way to spend a day and that stockman is really nice! As someone with three children and two stepchildren between the ages of 18 & 25, I can tell you from very real experience that you will sorely miss these blissful years!

Enjoy!

Mark

That is one outstandingly pretty knife!:thumb up:

Smooth graceful lines, rounded bolsters, great amber bone, the whole package is notable. Good choice.

I know what you mean by being alone. After our last child left home, Karen and I were sitting there one night, and we looked at each other and had the same thought; it was too quiet in the house. After so many years, it was outright weird to have such quiet in the home. Took a long time to get used to it, but we did finally relax and embrace it.

Jennifer, congrats on a special day and a great little knife. The amber jigged is their base model, but it always looks good to my eye!

Nice Jone! I have the same knife in SS and I love it and it has seen tons of pocket time. Case does a great job with their amber bone and I hope it makes for tons of happy slicing!

Hey! No scaring the children lol
That was too funny

Purty knife. Love cases amber bone.

What a great story and FANTASTIC knife! That amber bone is excellent btw, some of the best I've seen. I hope you enjoy the Stockman as much as I do, I've fallen head over heels for it. For about 3 months now it's absolutely dominated the #1 spot in my EDC. It's 3 knives in one and the thickness of the knife is barely more than a 2-blade. To me it's not even noticeable.

Enjoy your Stockman! That one is a beauty. Lots of pics when you get time of course :)

Nice knife, and I and the Frau can definitely relate. We've got a 6 yo, 3 yo, and newborn. You know you're starved for solitude when you look forward to driving 8 hours round trip for a five hour meeting. And when I came home, I made sure to take the kids for a couple hours to give the Frau time off. A drop in the bucket, I know, but still invaluable.

Michael

Oooh if I was to refer to the the wife as the Frau...I betting bad things would happen to me. You know what let me try it out right quick hehe

I got lucky. She wasn't familiar with the term :p
