Good, Serious Deployment (Fixed) Blade?

Well I didn't know they were made in china? Maybe I'll get a US made blade. Those crafty chineese may have spiked it with something, if you know what I mean! :D

The Tech Bowie is actually a very well made knife (not made in China) that is just as functional as many others its size and is capable of far more than stabbing somone/something. The Tech Bowie and its sheath is a lot of knife for the size and weight but you're still going to want to have a good multitool. A Leatherman Wave is a nice place to start.....there are several nice models on the market.

I have two different Tech Bowie's, a new SOG Super Bowie (love it), three Ranger RD series (the original spear points), a few Bark River's....Teddy w/stacked leather handle , Bravo-1 and 2 and a couple Scrap Yard blades as well and the SOG's have preformed just as well as any of my other fixed blades. The Tech Bowie's are a bit too light to do any serious wood chopping but then I doubt that would be a problem in the military.

My point is its a mistake to dismiss SOG's fixed blades, I have some that were made in Seki-Japan and others in Taiwan and you'd never know which is which by using them. Taiwan has state of the art knife manufacturing facilities and they are capable of producing some incredible knives.....checkout a Spyderco Sage 2.

Best of luck to you, take the time to make sure that you know what you're signing up for before signing ANYTHING. I have nothing but respect for the brave men and women of our military......I can't always say the same for those who send them to war.

I'll much rather take the Firepower, over Mobility any day.

The only thing this statement does is highlight your ignorance to gun fighting. That's not surprising though, you're 16. Trust me, you want mobility. Leave fire superiority to the machine gunners. Regular infantry needs to be fast. Speed and Accuracy win gun fights, not firepower.

Also, a 7" combat knife won't increase your firepower at all, but it will (by a small margin) decrease your mobility due to increased weight.

If you're stuck on SOG, get a NW Ranger (Taiwan) or Field Pup (China). IMO, those are the only 2 fixed blades worth looking at for an Infantry utility knife in their line up. I'd go with the NW Ranger, personal. They commonly go for $50 online. A kydex sheath should start at about $40 maybe less, though I haven't looked. For a field knife, I suggest kydex because they tend to require less maintenance.

Still, by all means and above all else, get whatever you want. Knives are cool. Like I said, I carried a Strider. I also accepted that I was carrying extra weight for a purpose. We did a lot of vehicle stops/searches. A big knife had a HUGE intimidation factor while I was in Iraq. I didn't have to hump it everywhere though, as I mentioned before.

Sheesh. I'm not a mall ninja, the cop I gave a SOG Seal 2000 to isn't a mall ninja. Express your opinions with contempt and earn contempt in return.
Was that an old, or new version? I really liked the old versions with the long choil on it... in fact, I'd get one if they were still being made.

I don't know... I have leather sheaths for nearly all my knives, and I have nothing but good things to say about leather. I even make my own leather sheaths for knives I didn't want to pay a custom price for (My ESEE-5, and 4, and all of my Cold Steels, and My Buck 110, and 119, along with my Uncles 119). They seem to perform very well, and if they're waterproofed right, I've never had a problem with soaking up water (on my BRKT Aurora's Sheath, that was not waterproofed, It did have a problem with that, but bees-wax gave an easy fix to that.)

Why not carry the USMC Kabar that you mentioned earlier? I like the blackjack, but for the money the Kabar F/U's are excellent. I would recommend the BK7 for a tougher knife, and it is a little heavier too. But really , what you have is well suited for you perceived needs.

The SEAL 2000 that I have is made of AUS6, made in Seki-Japan (don't believe all were made in Seki) and is powder coated and looks just like this, except I have the older version sheath: http://sogknivescollectors.com/seal-2000-knife.php
There are A LOT of very good fixed blades out there, my point was don't dismiss SOG as I have two of their Tech Bowie's (a TiNi version and the 2005 Limited Edition non-coated blade) and they're both very well made as is the SOG Super Bowie that arrived her just this week. LOVE the Super Bowie, fills the hand better and has the weight needed if chopping wood is on the "to do' list. What strikes me about the SOG's is that the fit and finish is damn near perfect....I look for imperfections and can't find them on these Bowie's.

Best of luck to you!

YES... THAT'S IT! I absolutely LOVE that version of teh Seal 2000 (I really do not like the new version)... the same goes for the new vs. old Seal Pup's. And I, too have looked at those Super Bowies, They're on the "Christmas" list for his year :D
If you have any updates on that Super Bowie, let me know how you like it.

Will do, can't wait to put the Super Bowie to work. I have the older SEAL Pup (Seki-Japan version) and it's seen a lot of use and just a few weeks ago I bought the new SEAL Pup Elite (plain non-coated blade) and so far I like it FAR more than I expected. I found it online for just over $50 so I figured I couldn't lose and it turns out that I like it more than the original. I like the longer handle, not having the serrations and the thicker blade. There are so many great knives out there today that it can make your head spin....great time to be a fan of knives. Lately I feel like I've been on a roll with SOG's fixed blades with all four surpassing my expectations.

By the same token I've been on a roll with ZT, Spyderco and A.G.Russell when it comes to great folders. :D

I'd take my Vic Spirit X multi,Rat RC3,Vic Climber, and my Case Peanut. It might sound like alot, but I'd be able to live with it.

I would, but I've had problems with mine... both of them.
