Good sharpener for a newbie

At the risk of sound haughty let me say this..... I have very good hand/eye coordination and I'm very good with my hands. I've tried freehand about 3-4 times over the years. I can freehand OK, but I like the consistent results I get from my Edgepro. Freehanding is not mysterious magic but there definitely is a learning curve and you must have patience. Even then, you're not guaranteed quality results, but you may have a feeling of pride begin to grow as you get better. God bless anyone that can freehand sharpen to their own satisfaction.

I live in a small place with no garage so the power equipment thing is not really and option at this point. I'm not too concerned about doing it fast or if it can be assembled/disassembled quickly, more that it puts a very very sharp edge on the blade and requires very little skill and know how.

I use a Sharpmaker and have never needed anything else. Works perfect at maintaining edges and is super easy to use.

I have to side with the others on freehand sharpening. Yes there is a learning curve, and yes your results will be unpredictable...at first. It's also a little frustrating to learn, but once you do, you can sharpen your knives quickly, effectively, and easily, and all with -0- set-up time. You also don't have a bunch of equipment to lug around. It's well worth the effort to learn, and no one who ever learned ever regretted it. I promise you you won't regret it, and lots of people here can help you through the learning curve. But make no mistake, your results WILL be predictable, and quicker. Just my .02 cents. Good luck with your decision, if I can be of any help, feel free to P.M. me.

Nice question and responses, and hopefully its cool if I add a query: If you are going to go freehand and start cheap, is it better to go with a 'steel' or 'stone' system? Like OP I need to get into keeping my blades sharp. I learned freehand growing up but now need to get something of my own which is more capable than the old honing steel in my kitchen..
