Good small dog

I have a Manchester Terrier named Snoopy I got from the humane society. He is a fantastic dog, very well behaved, he probably barks one single "woof" about once a week, whenever somebody startles him at the door to our house.

This is the best dog. He looks like a Jack Russell except slightly bigger (about 20 lbs) and colored like a Doberman. Very cute and very sweet. He looks like a stocky, muscular, less pointy Doberman puppy and is perfectly happy to sit in someone's lap all day. But he plays like crazy when he knows it's appropriate for him to do so. Very smart little dog. He is so good that I take him to work with me every day and he never bothers anyone. I never had to train him. He came from the Humane Society perfectly trained, housebroken, everything.

Snoopy gets along great with all of the other dogs in the neighborhood and everybody loves him. I would recommend a Manchester Terrier to anyone looking for a nice, quiet little dog.

Get a Chuwennie....cross between a Chiuahau(sp)Taco Bell dogs and a minature wennie dog....weigh about 5-6 pounds when full grown.

I've got to put in my 2 cents worth. I always have a bird dog, but the wife likes lap dogs so also have one of them. Hers is 1/2 Bichon and 1/2 poodle. It is a great house dog, small, very soft fur that does not shed. Extremely attached to people, likes everybody and makes lots of friends. Only down side is lots of brushing and trips for grooming. We also had a schnauzer, one was enough for me! Too yappy and not the friendliest thing either.

Sigh...okay many small terriers get a pass, foxes and manchesters in particular. Others are just too tweaked out. Rescues from the pound are the way to go, always. All kind of good animals there. Many Karma points.

Many owners of Neo cani allow their miniture animals to behave in a way that could be downright destructive in the larger real dog breeds. " I just can't get shitzie to ever to do what I want her to do." Yip yip yip yap yip yip ...:grumpy:
IMHO if you could breed a 65 lb pekinese you'd have the most dangerous, uncontrollabe dog-like animal on the planet:eek:

That said, you can never be too sure of the father and end up with a larger dog than you wished for.

staffordshire bull terrier is a great dog (20-35 lb), but not for those who haven't had previous experience with real bull breeds. Good watch dog, barks when needed, shuts up when it isn't, will be good with critters it is raised with (but not the neighbors critters). If you are interested in bulldogs, boston terriers and french bulldogs are healthier (and smaller) then english bull dogs.Get your checkbook ready to pay the vet with an english bulldog:(

Smartest and best dog i've ever owned. Miniature Australian Shepherd...18" at the shoulder, so not too big. Smarter than I am, and totally inexhaustable....

OK - here's my vote. English Bulldog. Most people think they are a big dog because they are "heavy" but all in all they are just "packed tight". They don't exercise much (good for an apartment) and are just a loveable as can be. I have one that I raised around cats and they get along just fine - sometimes he chases them but they ask for it. :D

With them living there alone, a bully would help on the security front - his bark definately makes him sound big, if the bad guys got in the door they would realize he was a big lover.

If you don't know what a British Bull looks like, think of the stocky dog on Tom & Jerry.... he's cute, right?

Oh man, I love bulldogs. But apparently, they're just not "cute" enough for the girls...

My brother has a bulldog of unknown origin and composition (from Planet X), and it's great. I totally agree with you, it's a full sized dog folded into a small dog frame. That's why I like em.

The miniature australian shepherd is beautiful!

Yeah aussies are gorgeous dogs, especially with the merle combinations they come in...i get comments all day long on my dog's striking grey eyes...

Aussies are not lap dogs, though...be fully prepared to exercise him for 45 minutes a day...and not walking. If he doesnt get exhausted once a day, he will FIND something to keep him busy. (This means forceful reorganization of your house)

French Bulldog.

But I would secon/third/fourth the rescue option. There's nothing like a rescue dog.

i know it's not 'manly', but i do like poodles. they are smart and if you pick the right one, they are not yappy. poodles also come in a variety of sizes to pick from.

the other breed you might want to look into is the Shiba Inu. it is a Japanese dog that has that cute factor the girls want. it is a primitive breed, so not for a novice dog owner... quiet, good indoors, a little aloof like a cat and can be trained to use a litter box like a cat. it is a medium sized dog though. definately research this breed before you buy though. a pic to show size:
