A long time ago I got some red mallee and decided after one knife that it was my favorite handle material, except maybe African blackwood and ivory. It's terribly hard, finishes easily, and is flat out stunning. I've been busy with other stuff and haven't pursued it, but now I'm thinking I want to sock away a good supply of red mallee blocks and scales. And maybe some york gum too.

Does anyone know who has good quality pieces of this stuff for decent prices?

Rob has a bunch of caps, but no blocks. If you could cut them well, you might get multiple blocks out of one cap, but you'd also have some waste. Take a look, some nice wood there. He was the first place I thought of.

Myron over at dream burls has red and brown malliee. I highly recommend his site. Great pieces for great prices.

I've bought several blocks from Myron at dreamburls.com, all top notch stuff. I haven't tried any mallee but he does have some for sale.

There is a chap in Chesapeake, VA who goes by Australianburls.com. I used to get nice stuff from Aussiefantom.
There is also an ebay seller called Austrailianturningtimbers.

I am based in Australia and personally know Adam from Turning Timbers. I know him as I buy a lot of timber from him and he has been great. He has a great range of Aussie hardwoods including what you are after.

I have no other affiliation other than mentioned. Just a happy customer.

Cheers

Matt

Here is a couple of Australian sources : Pop's Shed info@popsshed.com.au 0397270611, you will of course have to add the Aust pre fix numbers. Also The Timber Wolf woodturner, timberwolfturner@gmail.com 0437251453. Both of these blokes specialize in Australian burl including Mallee. You might prefer to get it from sources in the US for the convenience but these blokes are cheap at $10 per Kg of wood. Of course you will have to pay postage and will have to cut it up yourself but that can give you more options.

yes dream burls also has a bit of a sale on the Aussie stuff ATM

Thanks for all of the feedback guys! I've been away from the internet for a few days and am just now getting back to this. I appreciate all of your help.
