My wife let it slip that I would be getting the Delta SA180 grinder I've been looking at for giftmas this year and I'm interested in making some knives, stock removal method at this point but I'd love to pound some hot steel one day as well.

What I'm looking for is a good source for O1 bar stock. 1/8" thick or so ought to do it.

Could anyone share a good vendor that accepts small orders? I know McMaster-Carr has what I need but are there forumites that you'd recommend? I'd love to give someone here a little business. Thanks.

Fastenal locations will sometimes carry 01 flat stock and can order it for you at pretty reasonable pricing. Just do a search and find a store close to you. They also carry round drill rod that is 01. The flat stock is precision ground and annealed. They will sell bar stock in 2'-3' lengths which may be enough to get you started without spending a bunch of money.

I don't really know about who has the best price, but I've ordered a few things (including some precision ground O-1) from NWA (Nick) on the Knifemakers for sale section of this board, and his service is outstanding. If he is still selling it, I encourage you to give him a call.

Do yourself a favor and find a local supplier, so you don't have to pay for shipping.

If you order from admiral steel for instance. 1/8" x 1" x 18" is $15.35 and shipping is $21.32!!! You pay more in shipping than you do for the steel!

I just bought that same piece of steel from a local place for $9 out the door!

www.flatground.com Shipping on the bar minimum is around 7 bucks and up depending of course all on weight.

first price is 1 item, 2nd price is 2-5 items, 3rd price is 6+ items.

steel comes directly from the manufacturer.

These prices of course are all for precision ground.

I agree with the sourcing it locally comment it can really save a lot of time and money. I ordered my first steel from Admiral but since then I have found a place locally where it is half the price. In this case there is normally a $50 min order but that is waved if you are picking it up. I suspect a lot of places will do this.

Try calling a few of your local places for example:
http://www.leedsteel.com/ looks promising in Rochester.

When I put my grinder together I came across this place, they have O1 that isn't precision ground at a decent price. 18" piece of 1/8 x 2" is less than $20. Just look around there are alot of places that sell O1

Another great guy to work with is Pop' Knife Supplies. It's a mom and pop business (so to speak :) ), and he's a great guy to work with.

Wow. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll check out the links and also check the yellow pages. I'd love to buy locally. I just didn't know how common a product O1 stock would be. Really folks, thanks.
