Good starting traditional knife. Pictures appreciated!

I like peanuts, but i say go for a stockman. Barlows are good too, but there are few inexpensive USA made ones still being made.
I would buy - Case Peanut Yellow CV, Case Medium Stockman Chestnut bone (the one with the pen blade instead if the spey), and an older schrade or camillus from the bay.

I guess I would suggest sticking with a company that has good FF. Someone getting into tradiitionals could get thrown right off with some of the sloppy manufacturers.

I know when I got back into them and picked up two queen whittlers I almost turned right back. Then Oeser recommended GEC to me. If I wanted a good first impression I think I would stick with them.

Boy, there are lots of really good "first traditional" knives out there. A lot of them have been posted above already. I like medium size knives best for every day carry so I have to say my recommendations would be the mini trapper as shown above. I like the Case Texas jack a lot and have a couple versions now, will probably get a couple more over time. Also the copperhead pattern as made by Boker, Queen, and others is a nice size and very usable pocket knife. All of these knives are plenty economical. As for me, I carry the mini copperhead pattern most of the time, with others taking up the slack at times.
