154cm is a great stainless and easy to work. Please don't confuse easy to work with inferior quality, it makes an excellent blade. Same goes for 1084. Its even cheaper and easier to use!

For a stainless I would use CPM154,same as 154cm but made by a powdered metal technology. For a carbon steel 1084 is hard to beat.
I still use these two steels in almost all my knives.

I concur exactly with what Stan said. Both are easy to work, and both are good enough for the pros as well as the beginners.
