As of right now my only stoves are a MSR Pocket rocket, and a Westwind Trangia alcohol stove. I am wanting to add a larger propane stove to my collection for car camping type use. I want something that offers good value, and is reliable. Portability isn't much of an issue, given its intended use.

Any ideas on where to start looking?

For car camping you can't go wrong with a Coleman stove.

I prefer the dual liquid fuel type myself.

Thanks for the input thus far.

I had another question. Will a "propane" stove run off of Iso-Butane? And vise versa?

not sure - they may require different apertures in the burner (just like converting from LP to natural gas and vice versa)

Iso-butane stoves *usually* will not burn propane - different nozzle and inlet jet sizes.

Coleman is the first to pop up. New ones have piezo ignition Easy to find in any sporting goods section. Parts easy to find. Probably next most common is Primus.

I've got a coleman multifuel that hasn't seen any use whatsoever, but it's got a pretty solid construction and from what I've seen on river trips they're pretty reliable.

The Coleman multifuel are hard to beat for car camping. I have a regular gas type and have used it for years. My Dad's that is like 50 years old still works like a champ.

I bought a Coleman PerfectFlow 2-Burner stove back in the early to mid 90's and it worked great for yours. Loaned it to a relative for a campout and after it came home, it was accidently left out in the rain and rusted up. Doesn't work now and will cost about $45 to $50 to repair so I'm going to get a new one one of these days.

Check out Coleman Propane stoves on their website. They make quite a few. Most, if not all the ones that use the 1lb cylinders can be adapted to use standard 20lb cylinders. When I get my new one, I plan on getting the adaptor, a 20lb cylinder and a T adapter for the cylinder so I can run a lantern and maybe another appliance off it.

Coleman hot water on demand would be a good choice to run off that 20lb cylinder. i got to use one and hot water while camping and not having to wait for it to boil up is a luxury for sure :D

For car camping its very hard to beat a coleman. Check ebay, theres some good deals there. Coleman also sells a conversion kit for their whits gas stoves to use propane, its just a gas valve and generator on a hose, requires no mods to the stove. Great system

your local walmart should have a selection of camping stove available. go take a look.

oh....

haha, well then i would try and order a coleman online. i would suspect your local outdoor sporting goods stores will sell similar propane canisters.

if finding canisters is hard, perhaps a multifuel two burner would be a good choice. like something that runs of white gas/naptha.

have you checked your local sporting goods stores?
