the SAS survial manual is a pretty good one. it has a really wide range of info. but, it isnt specific to ant particular region, it is more general.

I second the SAS Survival Manual. It's probably the best all around book and comes in a mini Gems version that will fit in small places and weighs less. The problem is that it covers the entire world, so there will be a lot of info that does not apply that you're carrying around. Of course it makes interesting reading when you're sitting around waiting for rescue or to die.

Paul Tawrells Camping and Survival Skills seems like a pretty good one, but I don't own it. Way to big to pack in though.

Bushcraft by Mors Kochanski is a classic of course.

98.6 Degrees by Cody Lundin is a good no-nonsense guide, albeit a little crude.

+1

The best thing about this book is, that it doesnt confuse the reader with neat tricks that might or might not work... It doesnt tell you how to make traps, or identify edible plants etc. Instead it gives a realistic view on how not to die in a typical survival situation; how to conserve calories, how to regulate core temperature etc. Also the section about building a survival kit is the best Ive ever read. I honestly think this should be the 1st survival book for any outdoors enthusiast. Wisemans SAS book and Kochanski's Bushcraft are both great book for more detailed tricks.

If you're not concerned about the physical size of the book...Survival Wisdom and Know How is an excellent compilation of several other books. It's not extremely detailed on everything but it covers several topics and some topics it covers really in depth. However, being about the size of legal paper (11x14 roughly) it's a bit unweildy for carrying in the woods.
