good survival knife?

F-1 is my fav small blade. BUT even a K bar will do..... A knife wont make you survive. Using your head and know-how ,thats what makes you survive!!!!!! NUFF SAID!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I loved the shape, sharpness, and reputation of the Fallkniven. However, the handle is too small for my hand. I have to get rid of it. My hands are a little larger than normal, I wear an XL glove.

hi this is my first post i have been lurking for a few weeks but stay away from crkt knives. I bought a m21-sf crtk and the serrated part of bent and some serrations chipped quite badly on plastic sprite bottle. so even if their fixed blade knives are twice as good i would not count my life on one.

p.s i try not make it a habit to post negative things on any forums.

Well you started out on the left foot then. Just kidding, your opinions are your own. Welcome to BladeForums. :)

Bravo 1 for me. But any knife that has these qualities will work.

4" or longer, 3/16" or thicker blade
Fairly straight spine with full thickness almost to the tip
Tough steel that holds an edge and can take repeated impact well
Tough scales or handle that can take repeated impact well
Lanyard hole
Easy to field sharpen
Secure carry system

With a knife like this, you can cut, split, chop and baton wood to make shelter, tools and primitive weapons. You really don't have to spend a lot of money for a good setup. After the Bravo 1, my next favorite bush/survival knife is the $25 Condor Rodan. You should also have a second, clean knife for food prep and more precise work. A stainless Mora works well for that.

So I spend alot of time in the bush here in the Cascades of Oregon, I have recently started training myself in survival technique, but my knife sucks its stainless, I was going to buy a Gerber but I was told that if I do plan on building shelters, starting a fire with a flint ETC that I should go with a high carbon blade, I dont want to spend more than $120.00 for a good 4 1/2-5 " blade, any help would be most appreciated:) I use a magnesium block and flint AKA Faeroe rod, but I need it to split wood, gut an animal, and any other crazy thing that I can think of.
What knife are you using right now, and why do you think that it sucks?

Is it too small?
Is it too big?
Does it cut well?
Is it too thick?
Is it too thin?
Is the handle uncomfortable when doing lots of cutting?
Is it difficult to sharpen?
Does it refuse to hold an edge for a fair amount of cutting?

Why dont you hold onto your pennies and check out some of the crafters on this board. Koyote makes some real nice, no-nonsense blades that are very handy. These guys have their own subforum on this board.

My choice is a TOPS "Dawn Warrior".

...Depends a lot on what you hope to survive. Whatever you have with you when TSHTF is what you will survive with. If it's too big to carry, you won't have it when you need it. Just a thought.

I'm thinking of an incident here in Colorado a few years ago, where a rock climber got his hand pinned in a rockslide. He wound up cutting his hand off with his Swiss Army Knife to escape. No doubt, there were better tools for the job, and he may have had a better knife at camp, but the SAK served him well because he had it with him at the time he needed it.
