Good sword smith

Budget? Expectations? Sword type?

Details of what you are actually looking for can save a lot of time and effort. Some make up their own billets, others use stock from different sources and smiths.

Here is some solo work (not in my stable) by Kevin Cashen but consider them the pricy end of the bracket and time consuming while waiting on a list. How true to history is another consideration, along with the possibility of an entirely modern approach and design.

Others working with trash metal hilt parts and commercial folded blade billets can do up a typical Lord Of The rings type and offer it more quickly and for less money.

There are the retail production swords as well that might or might not be what you can afford and would suit your purposes.

Most of all though are considerations you can supply for others to make suggestions that will be helpful.

Try John Lundemo of Odinblades. Good stuff.
Rados blade stcok and John's fitting touches, a great combination.

There are quite a few higher end smiths/makers but you will not find them cheap. John has always kind of touted $400 and up but with a fancy sword, start with the four figure range even for the faux customs of others. The material and other work adds up. One thing I have seen happening time and again is a maker getting quoted prices by others and it may or may not be the case of a specific order or offer. John does seem to crank them out in fairly short order depending on supply and demand (along with waitng for a Rados billet or ground blade).

what im looking for is a hand-and-a-half style sword that is handforged, weighted right and feels good in the hand

im open to any kind of material and it doesnt have to be historicaly correct besides the fact that i want it to be hand forged

What is your budget? All the folded steel blades will have some hand involvement but many use power hammers (even Japanese masters) and rolling mills.

You might want to spend some time researching swords in general, or at least point to an image that appeals to you. In working with any smith/maker, a bit more information from you (particularly budget) are going to let others help you help yourself.

I would also advise getting a time line from the maker as to when it will be done and set some ridiculous date in the future that if it is not done you get your down payment back and call the deal off.

I had one maker in particular take more than two and a half years to get an order that was quoted at 4-6 months. Some makers do have years long waiting lists and that's fine as long as they are up front about it.

thanks guy my buget is around 6 to 7 hundred so i dont know if ill even be able to afford a hand forged sword so do you guys know of any good swords around that price?

The guys at Arms and Armor are a little more than that price. www.armor.com .

The good folks at Albion are a little more again. http://www.albion-swords.com/

They aren't hand forged but they are great swords and I doubt you will do better for the money.

Pretty much any carbon steel (and in fact stainless as well) can be used to make a tough sword blade if one knows how to do a proper heat treat. In other words the steel isn't as important as the construction. Oh sure someone comes out with some new miracle metal that's the greatest thing since sliced bread every few years, but the reality is that for most users they won't be able to tell a dimes worth of difference. I didn't think about BKS as posted above, but they might be worth a look. I think they could do something that would fall within your price range and the stuff of theirs that I have handled has been okay for the price point.

I just had an ideal is there any way i can just get a blank blade? it would be cool if i could make the guard and hilt myself. is there anyone out there that just sells blank blades? preferably presharpend

albion sells bare blades, takes some work but very reasonably priced. They do not come sharpened or polished, but for the price you can't beat em.

Do you have an metal working skills? Do you know how a sword is supposed to be balanced? Just things to consider.

i know how the blade needs to be balanced and i have a couple of friends who will help me with the guard so i should be covered on that. the only thing i need is a good blade....
