Show me your short knives!

I like big knives as much as the next guy. They're a good measure of a knifemaker's forging, grinding, heat treating, finishing and imagination. They appeal to us on a more primitive "me like steel" kind of level.

But there's something about smaller knives, too. While still a good canvas for a knife maker, there's an eye toward balance in hand and usability. Plus, they're a great way to own a nice hunk of steel with all the trimmings, something to admire for years or generations without breaking the bank as their larger cousins might.

Not to mention the fact that I feel they sometimes get the short shrift on this forum :)

So let's take a minute to celebrate the smaller things in life. Size does matter! I'm open to suggestions, but let's start off by keeping the thread for custom knives under 12 inches/30.5 cm. Show me yours and I'll show you mine!

Here's a beauty of a hunter from Manuel Quiroga Guiraldes featuring a tight tight tight chrysanthemum pattern Damascus blade, and a beautifully formed African Blackwood handle. This thing balances on the first finger, and is light as a feather, with great distal taper. Oh, and the lizard skin overlay is from a lagarto hunted on his property. The man does it all, folks.

Thank you Seth!!

(Did you buy that Borges book before or after my knife?? Amazing writer and a LOT of knife references in his work. My all time favorite writer)

Manuel,

No, you can tell from the last pic of the cover's edge this thing's seen some use. Much more than the knife :)

Borges is brilliant, and for a person who loves literature and knives, his stories really hit the spot.

If only I could find a proper criollo ;)

Come on folks. Don't leave this purty handful by its lonesome.

Thanks Manuel. That chubby choice is a good compliment to my curvaceous one.

I hope I don't bore anyone with variations on a theme, but I think it's time to up the ante.

Here's a mosaic Damascus hunter in ebony from Kyle Royer. Where the Manuel G is feather light and almost an extension of the finger, this oversized hunter is as brutish as it is beautiful. Hope you like it as much as I do.

John-- great stuff. I love your work.

Jon and Win - nice contributions. Love the ivory wharncliff and the Damascus on that Hancock.

2knife - that qualifies! Thanks for keeping it real and for showing what a short custom can do!

Michael Rader integral Cru Forge V personal carry. Koa and fossil walrus handle.

The Rader along with a trio of Ed Caffrey EBK's. At bottom, 1080 with G10 handle, then 52100 with ivory micarta, then Fossil damascus with jigged bone handle.
I'm a fan of ~3 inch blades, they carry so nicely and don't get in the way. Missing from the photos is the small Burt Foster Dark side knife, very comparable in size and purpose. I think it was on my belt when I was shooting those photos.
