good tool steel for rust resistance

Thanks for all the replies, they helped me out alot. I have come to the conclusion that I am going to build my own heat treating furnace. I have also aquired an older machinist hand book that has some great info on steel compositions and treatment. I will also hit up my local supplier to get some samples of different steel types to play around with. Damneng thanks for the offer but unfortunatley I live in Edmonton Alberta, Canada. I only know of one knifemaker around my area, I believe he has an open house once a year so hopefully I will be able to make it out and meet him.
Thank again for all the info.

He'll put you in touch with a dozen makers in your area. There are at least two suppliers in Alberta and Brian Cuthbertson is right in your town.

You are not alone. :) There are LOTS of us here. Let us know if you need anything you can't find.

I will do that! Its nice to know that there are others in the area.
Would you happen to know of any suppliers that carry kydex and micarta that are in AB? So far the only kydex supplier I could find was in Calgary but they still need to ship it in from the US.

I don't know anyone local that sells kydex but Ed may know. I just ordered a bunch of Micarta and G10 from one of my suppliers and it should be here in a couple weeks. I know Brian had a good supply of Dymondwood.

We should probably take this to email or PM - getting a little OT - Sorry :o

Having made several hunter/skinner knives out of O1 and having had them in the field hunting elk in the back country, just stick with the 01. Polish it up and as long as its not actually wet when put up I've never had an issue. I've crossed rivers and been caught in the rain. The tiny bit of rust I have on one is from putting it in the sheath before the dye was fully dry (did the process backwards and died after forming).
