Good traditional folder for ~$25?

I would suggest a rough rider toothpick or case sodbuster. I own a couple of each and really like them both. Make sure to let us know what you decide. We love pictures!

I couldn't contain my excitement so I ran to Lowe's and picked up my first traditional, a Case Sodbuster Jr! :) Thanks for all the recommendations guys, definitely going to look into Rough Rider and Schrade in the future.

sorry for the low quality pix

If I was looking for a functional, EDC slip joint, I would seriously consider the A.G. Russell Rancher or Cowboy. Fashioned after the sodbusters, they are solid, great cutting single blades. Rancher is 3"long blade. Cowboy is 3.5" blade. Handles available in Yellow Delrin, Cocobolo Wood and Black Ricarta. Rancher has 3-inch blade and Cowboy has 3-1/2 inch blade. I have the Yellow Delrin Cowboy and carry it every day along with a 2-3/4 inch sheath knife. Both slip folders are AUS8 steel and are put together very well. These are truly nice knives costing 24.99 to 29.99. A well made knife at a great price. My knife will do everything I need in a camp or hunting scenario. As I do not baton wood with slipjoint,s I carry a larger knife for such things.

I'll second or third the Schrade USA pickup. IF you have patience you'll find a good deal. I don't have any experience w/ RR.

Can you push your budget to around $30? If so, you can get the Buck Ecolite 112, a single blade lockback. A lighter version of the original. For a bit more you can get the original 112 in brass and wood.

You can US made Buck slip joints in this range too, but most are multi blade.

The Case Sodbusters and Opinels are other great 1 blade options.

The Douk-Douk is a really nifty, and quite unique traditional folder in the Sub-25 dollar price range. As is the somewhat more modern Mercator K55K Blackcat.

Just a thought.

Thanks, for that. I just clicked on the thread looking at the title and then I thought I stepped into the twilight zone after seeing the date.
Not to mention the disgust at seeing that pinhead with the screen name Absintheur.

I *hate* it when that happens.

I wonder if the forum software could flag these Lazarus threads.

Really you can't get a better stockman for under 30$ unless you find a case or similar on ebay. It's a great change-pocketable size, yet useful. It's got smooth action, and the steel takes a good edge and holds it reasonably well. While I would normally go with a carbon steel or hard-use equivelant but with a change-pocket stockman the stainless comes in really handy. I found the my carbon case rusts quickly in a pocket in a place like tucson (it's hit 100 degree's for 6 months straight this year, least year it hit 110 a lot).

However, there is a catch. The edges are twice as thick should be. Like, instead of .020" thick they're .040" thick. When you consider that if you start at .0625" (1/16" spine thickness) and end up at .040" thick at the edge, you almost have a tiny tiny puuko grind of horror. So, if your willing to spend some time on a belt sander (be really careful to not overheat it, small thin blades overheat fast) you can end up with an amazing traditional stockman for really really cheap.

Ha! I think Natural-Outlaw isnt paying attention to the dates. There is another soddie thread he raised fron them thread too.

Halloween...

I just got my first traditional like 3 months ago. I got a clam pack from Walmart, with 2 Bucks for 12 dollars! It came with a slimmer single bladed knife (I believe it's a "Solo"), and the other knife (Buck "Trio"?) has 3 blades (a clip, a spey and a sheepsfoot). But i don't think any of them have 2.5 to 3 inch blades.

I haven't really carried them much, but decided to try out something different, so I got another Walmart special for around 21 dollars. A Camillus Yello-Jacket. This one is a "Muskrat", which has two identical blades on each side. I picked it up because it looks nice with a yellow carbon fiber-like material on the handle.

Finally, the one I've carried the most, and the one I would recommend for you to start off with, a Kershaw Double Duty. This one has a 2 3/4 inch blade and a 2 5/8 blade, It has a thumbstud for each blade, and both blades lock with the same liner (traditional blade experts correct me if calling it a liner is incorrect).
You should definitely check out the Double Duty.

LOL I just read through the thread after posting! Not only was he specifically looking for a single bladed knife, but this was posted in 2010! Who's responsible from bringing this thread back from the grave?! :p

I am still chuckling over that. If there was ever proof that most folks don't read other posts (only topic headers) before posting their own contribution this is it. Seriously, even after you point out, the other posts just keep coming...

It helps explain why so many posts reiterate the same information in the same thread over and over. Would you bet there will be more posts after this one as well?

Another old thread. The Original Poster has long since found a knife.
