Good travel sharpener

The ERU Super "V" fits in your pocket is accurate to 1/2 degree with settings between 12 and 40 degrees. There is no guess work once you know the edge angles of your blades; just set the degree scale to the angle needed and sharpen ever knife you have in your kit. It is it's own strop as well.

That's what I use! I prefer this over my diafolds because if you pull out the pen rod and flip it over (at least on the Smith's version) it has a tapered round side used for sharpening serrations. Whenever I go out in the woods I take a couple of knives with me and one of them is a combo edge so the pen comes in handy. Besides that it slips right into the pen slot of my backpack's small compartment.

If you want something to put a utility edge on you knife since you will be camping you may want to check this out. Diamond coated pen style rod, i have it and carry it daily. For like $13 shipped to your door in 2 days this is a good product to look at.

I would suggest adding 3 DMT Diafold models to your sharpening supplies. EF/EEF, and some combination of XC, C, and F (get two of them in a double side and one single side). You can also grab a Magna-guide to use them with the aligner clamp system for precision sharpening wherever you happen to be.

^^2nd this! Particularly for someone who does not have freehand skills. I do not understand why the ERU is not getting more support here. It's like "tilting at windmills" Fred! I guess I have to order one myself to be able to support you more!
Other options are the above mentioned Lansky rod system, the Worksharp Field sharpener 221 and other light guided systems.

It's obvious that the OP uses a "guided" system, how can you guys recommend a freehand solution then?

There are not much infos about ERU Super V sharpener.. the idea it's really nice but I always read the worst about push-throu sharpener. Where's the truth?

Which kind of edge is it creating?
Which kind of abrasive it uses?

I'm also looking for an easy and compact field guided sharpener..

I carry a Fallkniven DC3 or DC4 in my pocket most the time. My hunting pack has a DMT Diafold Coarse/Fine in it. I have a travel maintenance kit inside of an Otterbox 2000 similar to the kit that KSF used to offer. It contains a loaded leather strop (2-sided), Diasharp Coarse Card, Wet/Dry Papers, V-shaped ceramic rod, Sharpie, Polishing Cloth, Husky 8in1 Torx Screwdriver and lube.

I think much of the coolness with which the ERU has so far been received is due to the overall reputation of "V" sharpeners. There have been so many horrendous sharpeners built on this concept that through association, many dismiss the ERU out of hand.
I new this going in; but I also new that what I had created in the ERU is a winner. I know that overtime they will gain in popularity because they perform as stated and besides; there just plain cool.

Thanks for posting, Fred

Fred, if you trust so much in your creature why not to answer my questions?

My apologies Sir; just didn't see your post, its been a long day.

The inserts are C2 tungsten carbide. The inserts are lapped after being set in position, using a diamond plate that has a 350 grit surface. The edges it produces can be seen here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1127141-ERU-sharpener-review-Latest-Feedback-2-14

We shot this video earlier this year to show technique and give some insight into this tool.
