Good whittler

The 122 Mora
It is a laminated carbon fixed straight blade (for $15)

Excellent knife and certainly traditional

Even if you get a slippy
Get this as well

I'm a couple of steps ahead of you on that one. :) I've got two Mora's and an Opinel #8 and #9. :)

I got a small gunstock in amber bone. I'm having some serious buyers remorse right now. :/

I'm not familiar with that knife. Sorry to hear about the quality issues you are having with it.

I am really liking what I see with the 62's they are showing. I think you could make the coping into a modified wharncliffe pretty easily. I've got some GEC's with the coping blade and it is really nice, but I can see where a blade with some belly would be advantageous on a whittler at times.

This is a little different from the GEC options, since I don't own any, but I'm pretty fond of the Case swayback jack. It seems to have a nicer F&F than the other Cases I have. Here it is with a work-in-progress. The fine point on the main blade is pretty useful and surprisingly sturdy. The old Camillus is pretty good, too...

I'd say the #57 from GEC fits your bill quite well:

Thanks for posting this pic!

I have a few dedicated carvers-

But when I saw that #57 halfwhitt I knew that I NEEDED it! My wife bought it for me for fathers day in black buffalo horn. It's not here yet, but I wanted to thank you guys, and the op for the great thread. Can't wait to try out my first trad. :)

Case should make it right. Some of the small patterns have issues, especially the older ones. It's harder to finish the small patterns and I think some of their tooling is worn.

Ok, guys, I broke down and placed an order. I got a GEC #61 2 blade congress in Mexican Bocote. Now I just have to wait impatiently so I can try it out! I wish I had been able to find it with bone handles, but some things are just not meant to be.

What can I expect as far as a factory edge? I've run into some slip joints (and more modern knives!) that come with awful edges from the factory and others that come with a decent edge. Any sharpening suggestions to make the blades on this really pop?

Thanks for all the help,

Kristopher

My experience with GEC is that the edge isn't always razor sharp out of the box, but the blade geometry is such that they sharpen up with little effort. Their 1095 in particular is easy to sharpen. Their 440C is not particularly difficult, but like all 440C, wants a synthetic sharpener (ceramic or diamond).

I was heading out the door to a volunteer job and checked the tracking on my order. I saw that it had been delivered, so I ran to the mailbox and tore open the package. Holy COW is this thing nice! I'll be uploading pictures later. Now I feel a burning need for a pocket slip to keep it from getting dinged up.……

At your price range you can get a Great Eastern (and I see you did). Quality is excellent, the fit and finish and the steel types.

For under $50, Boker is an excellent choice. They have a great whittler pattern available in carbon steel and a choice of natural handles, and I've never gotten a poorly finished knife from them (unlike Case).

The original USA Old Timer knives have 1095 carbon steel blades, and can make good whittlers even though they never made a model specifically called "Whittler."

Congrats Kristopher, you should get much enjoyment from that one, and the Bocote looks amazing

I have a Camillus whittler just like that.

And then I have one in Black jigged bone without the BSA shield on the front.
