It's that time of year again. Some of us have wrapped up the Festival of Lights. The important Winter Solstice is upon us tomorrow. Christmas is in just a few days. Heck, there is even Festivus for the rest of us;) Whatever your beliefs, the winter months just seem to bring out the best in people (for the most part). I don't know if it is the traditional aspects and timing of the various Holidays, or if we are just hardwired to want to huddle to guard against the long cold nights in the dead time of the year. For whatever reason, people just seem full of good will this time of year, and I would like to pass along the feeling.

Before many of us take a long weekend to enjoy a little time off, I thought a little thread offering up some positive smoke for safe travels and well wishes was in order. Also, being a very powerful time of year where the Earth is in balance and men's hearts are full of life, it might be a good time for us to ask for a little special smoke if we need it.

I know that there are several of us in the Cantina suffering from the weather, suffering from sickness, suffering from the sickness of loved ones, suffering the passing of friends and family recently or experiencing the "first Christmas" without a particular loved one. I'm sure that there are a hundred other stories out there that haven't been aired here on the boards.

A personal bit of smoke that I would like to ask for if any of y'all have some to spare would be for my father in law. He has been battling cancer in some sort or the other since 2001. Now, it seems that his body is finally starting to lose the fight. A Brilliant man of just 63 years of age is probably going to Walk West sooner than later. In a last ditch effort, he was able to get into a chemo trial that will probably extend his life for several months to a year. The down side is that he is suffering massive amounts of nausea and intestinal distress. He's lost 20 lbs and is being injected with electrolytes 3 times a day. I'm a realistic man, just like my father in law. A complete turn around and cure is not in the cards for whatever reason. What I would like to ask for is that maybe, just maybe, the effects of the chemo that he is on won't be so sever for the Christmas holiday. A little smoke or prayer that Mike, my father in law, can enjoy the ham, the egg nog, the cookies, and the company of his family for what could be his last Christmas with us would be fantastic.
I'd greatly appreciate that, gentlefolk.

So, here's a little positive smoke and prayer going out to each and everyone of you this time of year. Prayer for safe travel, prayer for your families, prayer for your hardships. I wish each and every one of you a joyous season.

Happy Holidays
Joyous Solstice
Merry Christmas
Have a great long weekend

Well said.

Jake, I've known you almost four years and your eloquence just grows and grows. Surely, like myself, you've a bit of the Irish. ;)

Smoke up to tonight for your FIL, and another for everyone else on the list here at the Cantina.

Merry Christmas,
Joyous Solstice (tomorrow),

Mike

Best wishes for a Happy Christmas to all on the forum and at HI.

(and here's hoping that what you'd like comes true, Jake)

A beautiful post Jake.

I've got a lot to be thankful for this year. So far I'm cancer free after my surgery. Some of our group is not as fortunate.

So smoke, prayers and much love for this fine group. You're all in my thoughts and prayers!

Steve

Very nice post, Jake, and a great reminder of what a wonderful place this is. Best wishes to you and your family for a wonderful holiday and prosperous new year. Prayers for your father-in-law, that he find comfort and peace among loved ones.

(My wife and boys made it to Indiana last night. I will follow on Christmas Eve after a stopover in NC this weekend.)

Thanks to Yangdu, the kamis and everyone else who tends the fire and keeps the spirit of HI in their hearts throughout the year.

The holidays seem to bring out the melancholy in some of us, myself being my primary reference here. Yesterday would have been my Father's 85th birthday, a moody and
thought filled day. Mom has been gone 11 yrs., Dad 2 yrs., though I have my own lash-up of a family unit, the Holidays arent the same. Alot less disfunctional, and yet not.

Our immediate families are without crisis, for now, and that is a gift we cherish.
Our extended "recovery family", our dear friends who toil each day at sobriety, are doing pretty well.

To all whom deal each day with illness, pain, and strife, One Day at a Time.
Take life in the bites you can swallow, and remember, though we may think otherwise,
our Higher Powers never give us more than we can handle.

Our prayers and hopes for all of you and yours!

Mark, Courtney, Nik and Garth
