Good Will Thread

More from Dickens...

"At this festive season of the year, Mr. Scrooge," said the gentleman, taking up a pen, "it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the Poor and Destitute, who suffer greatly at the present time. Many thousands are in want of common necessaries; hundreds of thousands are in want of common comforts, sir."

"Are there no prisons?" asked Scrooge.

"Plenty of prisons," said the gentleman, laying down the pen again.

"And the Union workhouses?" demanded Scrooge. "Are they still in operation?"

"They are. Still," returned the gentleman, "I wish I could say they were not."

"The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour, then?" said Scrooge.

"Both very busy, sir."

"Oh! I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course," said Scrooge. "I'm very glad to hear it."

"Under the impression that they scarcely furnish Christian cheer of mind or body to the multitude," returned the gentleman, "a few of us are endeavouring to raise a fund to buy the Poor some meat and drink and means of warmth. We choose this time, because it is a time, of all others, when Want is keenly felt, and Abundance rejoices. What shall I put you down for?"

"Nothing!" Scrooge replied.

"You wish to be anonymous?"

"I wish to be left alone," said Scrooge. "Since you ask me what I wish, gentlemen, that is my answer. I don't make merry myself at Christmas and I can't afford to make idle people merry. I help to support the establishments I have mentioned -- they cost enough; and those who are badly off must go there."

"Many can't go there; and many would rather die."

"If they would rather die," said Scrooge, "they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population. Besides -- excuse me -- I don't know that."

Merry Christmas everybody. :)

Peace, love, hope, and joy.

My blood relatives have decreased, but I have plenty of family.

The holiday, a holy day, to laugh and love and feast and pray,
May all of us delight in those we may have lost, and those we've got,
Through winter's long cold crystal spell, we wish the whole world well.

Wishing the best for all of the good people at the Cantina and their loved ones this holiday season.

Hey Guys,

It's been a while since I've posted. I've been busy with school, and as many of you know, I've also been managing my treatments for cancer. For a number of reasons, I've drifted away a bit, but I want to take this opportunity to tell you all thank you. Whether you really know it or not, this place has played an important role in my life, and I appreciate it. We've seen great men come and go, and I know I've learned a lot here. Thank you to all of you who have been an example of goodness in this world.

Things are going pretty well for me. I'm in college, I have the greatest girlfriend a guy could ever hope to ask for (of almost 5 years), a good family, and a generally good life. True, I have to worry about the inconveniences of cancer, but I'm determined. I've seen enough of the world to know that it's really, really good, and I'm just not willing to leave for a really long time. Especially this time of year, when the things that make a person happy to be alive are most evident, I know what I'm fighting for. Thanks to all of you for illustrating that.

No matter what happens, try to remember a few general rules. People generally, deep down, are pretty decent. You get out of life what you put into it. If you just try to do your best, and remember that there are people out there who care about you, things really will generally turn out all right in the end. Some times there will be a lot of crap in between, but most of that will pass. Just keep living, and realize how much good there really is out there.

Happy Holidays, everybody. Be well, and my smoke and best wishes to all you and yours!

Chris

Chris, as Mr. Spock would have said if he had an internet-enabled computer: "Live long and post more!" :D

To be politically incorrect: Merry Christmas.

For those who are not Christian, or who do not celebrate Christmas, then happy holidays, happy new year, and all the best wishes. (that goes for the Christmas-celebrators too ;) )

Chris, You continue to be an inspiration to me. You're in my thoughts and prayers.
