Google Buzz

This is interesting. Stealth snooping. Last night, I wanted to find out more about Facebook, and found that they recently changed their privacy settings without making it clear to their subscribers they were doing so. They went to a system like this Buzz, where your records can be largely open to people you don't know when you thought the system was opt-in instead of opt-out.

I just checked my gmail account and as I recalled, I had turned chat off. But buzz was turned on. Not any more -- thanks for the warning!

that's not entirely accurate. facebook simplified their privacy settings some months ago (which were arguably byzantine). when the did this, they notified all current users with a dialog when they logged in as to how their current privacy settings compared with what they recommended.

The catch was that the settings that facebook recommended were not private. Facebook was clearly hoping that users would just accept the recommended settings and not think about it again. The defaults for new users are pretty much wide open.

My profile was locked up tight, and still is.

That's my point: the looser privacy mode was opt-out, rather than opt-in, a known trap for the unwary. A service website like Gmail or Facebook might be more solicitous of the needs of its users, instead they clearly pander to the advertisers who would benefit from greater access to user records.

I just saw it myself. If it is a Facebook clone, it's going to try to get people to join in on G-mail. I don't care for any of these "social networks".

Hey EB, all you have to say is that BF is the ONLY social network worth your time. That we will all understand!

The best social networking site i have seen anywhere is the bar, atleast until they pass that smoking ban later, than that will suck. :D

speaking of social networks, believe it or not, I was looking at upcoming movies for 2010 and Hollywood made a movie about Facebook. It comes out in i think Oct. and is called The Social Network.
