I saw some one was useing it so i found it and down loaded it. I am having trouble using it. Could some one give me tips . I really looks awesome to draft knives i just need help. thanks kellys

Hi, I use it all the time, I can answer any questions about it (except for the dynamic models, I haven't done that thing yet)
I start with a basic length for the blade and the handle, then draw the rough width, then use the curve tool to draw in the details. Remember to wait until the line turns teal, meaning that the line is running tangent to edge.

hey im a beginner at using it too and im having difficulties. think its cool, but its just to annoying for making knife templates but sadly its all i have. if you go to the main site you can find tutorials on pretty much everything hope this helps

I am having trouble with curves i will go back the instuctions. If that dont work ill draw free hand again but iderather master a proper sketch and then print to make some kick ass patterns. I finished another 6 knives readyfor heat treat i ll show when im done the handles. kellyw

Have you guys run through all of the training material online? The videos are particularly helpful.

That said, one of sketchup's limitations is in the area of compound curves. It's decent overall though and certainly a useful design tool. I've got some knife designs I've done with it that I hope to get to making someday.

Is there anybody here who would be able to make a video of them going to the process of making a knife in sketch up? I know Ive had a lot of trouble figuring it out, and those videos show you how to do a lot of stuff that i don't really need to know to just sketch up a knife.

I was thinking about it, I have never made a video before, though. It takes me about 5 mins to draw a knife, and maybe 10 mins to refine it into something that I would make.
The way I do compound curves is to make an exaggerated curve, then make another curve off of that one. Alternatively, you can draw the curve and use the move tool to coerce it into shape.
The pro version is nice for exporting to cad, but it has to be bought for roughly 500USD or "shared"

If you would be willing to do it, maybe we can get some here to help explain how to make a video off the computer screen. I googled it and came up with this: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080706135454AAx2RLe

Past that I'm not really sure how else you could do it. Hopefully someone else has more experience with this.

I don't know anything about google sketchup - in fact I've never heard of it. So, I can't really help you there, but I can tell you that there are other softwares out there.

I use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop (plus Flash, Dreamweaver, Director, etc.) on a daily basis, but they cost way too much to for just drawing knives. However, there are some other free alternatives. Check out Inkscape ( http://download.cnet.com/Inkscape/3640-6675_4-10527269.html ) as an Illustrator alternative or Gimp ( http://www.gimp.org/downloads/ ) as an alternative to Photoshop.

I'm saying this while not knowing anything about Sketchup, so you may already have a better software. Like I said, I use Illustrator. Just giving you some options.

Hi, I use this program most of the time, it is simple and fast and free...
I've made a movie of how I draw knives at G-sketchup using only 3 tools of it, arc, move and circle.
Sorry for the size of it. The codecs to encode this movie doesnt work at my system. It is about 80 MB, will take to download about 20 mins for most of internet users. Click to "Save file to your PC:" link at the bottom of the page: http://www.2shared.com/file/5353545/37dcb1d0/gscketch.html

I watched your video, it was pretty good. I am still considering doing one with a voice over that includes the rotate, offset, scale, and follow me tools.

One quick tip: when drawing the rivets, draw one, then use the move tool to move it to the other side. then hit "/2" and it will centre the middle one. You can then move them up or down so that they are all in the centre of the handle.
