Got 2 spyders... What next?

I've recently bought two Spyderco knifes. A Para-Military, that mostly gets heavy duty use (trips in the woods++) and a Spin that arrived a couple of days ago. I knew it was small before I bought it, but not THAT small. It's an amazing knife, but I'm just afraid I'll loose it.

So, what next? I'm looking for a knife that rides low, securely and discreetly in my pocket, is big enough to get 3-4 fingers on the grip but at the same time small enough to avoid scraing the crap out of people when it comes out.

I prefer G-10 og FRN for the handle. Norway gets COLD in the winter, so stainless might be uncomfortable. I'm right handed - tip up/down really doesn't matter to me. And a lanyard hole would be nice, so I can clip my small Photon light to it.

Of course it has to be Spyderco (or a Byrd for that matter). There are no stores over here that carry these knifes, and I'll be getting it online from the US. So what do I get next? The Dragonfly and Byrd Robin G-10 looks nice, but I'm not sure...

Help!

The Caly3 too large for what you are looking for?

I don't like the FRN Dragonfly because of the integrated plastic clip. The etched Dragonfly is beautiful though. AND it's VG-10.

I bought a Spin Etched and it looks really cool. I am not using it till Xmas though. Very excited. Seems like the knife to take when going out to nice places, or traveling very lightly.

The Caly3 fits the bill in many departments, but I'm afraid it's a little too large and "scary looking". At work, it has to come out in front of all sorts of people... But it's certainly one to consider.

I would hold out a little while for the Urban, which should be coming out pretty soon. If I remember correctly it is slightly smaller than the UKPK, which is slightly smaller than the Caly3. It will have the same low rider clip, and it is linerless, making it perhaps better for your purposes (less stainless steel in the handles). It is a slipjoint, but that shouldn't prevent you from enjoying the knife. Before the Caly3 came out, people bought the UKPK despite the lack of lock just because it was so good.

The new Urban looks nice, and I love the concept! Might have to wait for that... I also found the Salsa for around $50 on eBay. Any thoughts on that one?

The Native is a no nonsense little beast of a knife that sports the same steel as your Para. It is a bargain in the truest sense. Excellent steel and ergos. I got big ham hock hands and have no problem using it in a three finger grip without the choil or a four finger grip using the choil.

The Centofante III or IV is another one worth a look. Thin blade, looks good and has a longer handle that works well in a four finger grip. It's another bargain that goes under the radar. Get both :D

I was going to tell you try the Centofante 4 but that sounds like it might be too large for what you are looking for. If the Calypso 3 is too scary, the Centofante 4 wouldn't be much better.

I don't see a use for a knife much smaller than the Cent 4 or Caly 3.

I have tried the Salsa found the short stubby blade to be clumsy. What is MUCH better but still in the same class is the "S". It is based on the Salsa but has a pointy blade which makes it more usefull. It also is a bit smaller than the Salsa and has a cool look. It won't scare anyone unless they are afraid of holes.

I am not sure how available they are but they are fine little knives. I got mine for a good price and had no problem finding one. That was about a year ago so I am not sure what is going on with them now.

Just checked E-bay. They range form $50-60 plus shipping. Sounds like a pretty good deal for you since the dollar is so weak.

I'd seriously reconsider the Caly 3. Maybe you could practice holding it at arms length so it looks a little smaller. It's the poster child for EDC.

If size is an absolute issue, the G-10 Robin is a great little knife with as good ergos as you can get at that size, for very little money.

On the other hand, the Caly 3 really isn't that big.

Does anyone have a pic of the Caly 3 held in the hand? Because imagining from looking at the length figures from Spyderco really doesn't make me much wiser. And what about the ZDP Caly jr. that's around? I can't even find that on the Spyderco website...

The Robin and the Dragonfly are both nice people friendly knives. Not too small, just big enough to do most daily jobs. I know you mentioned the stainless as a negative, but the etched Dragonfly is a good looking knife plus its vg-10. The Robin is a great buy for the money though.

The etched series are very beautiful. I have an etched Cricket and Spin right now. Both are wonderful knives and the etching looks great and adds grip.

I carry two knives myself. A full size folder IWB for serious cuting chores/ emergencys, and then a little serrated ladybug+lanyard in my back pocket for using in front strangers. Makes for a very friendly yet prepared atmosphere, and its amazing how ferrocious that little serrated scalpel is on boxes and small things. I sugest that rather than compromising on semi-sartisfying middle knife.

Ok, now I'm starting to hate you guys. You just made me order both a Caly3 and a G-10 Robin, and chances are good that the wife will kill me once she finds out! I'll never ask for advice here again. /irony mode off. Thanks for the help, I'm sure I'll be happy with both of them. My wallet is not so happy, but what the hell...

Just wanted to give you an update on this. Both knives arrived on monday, actually 3 days ahead of the scheduled delivery - thanks FedEx and Knifecenter. Man, am I glad I got the Caly3! It's just right sized, the ergos are awesome and it oozes of quality. I was also plesantly surprised by the Byrd Robin. I didn't have high expectations for such a cheap knife, but it really is an excellent tool with an incredible performance considering what I paid for it! Right now I'm in the hospital, fresh out of surgery 4hrs ago after having an appendectomy. But I have a friend with me. From the drawer on my right side, my new Caly3 is smiling at me :-)
