I love my Manix but it is a tad heavy. For backpacking and hiking, I may replace my Manix with the CF Military since it is still a large blade but it is so much lighter. I am not hard on my knives like some people, I don't bash them with rocks or chop down 300 foot tall Redwoods with them.:jerkit: I use them for general knife stuff. The CF Military seems like it is strong enough to suit my needs 99% of the time. I will still carry the Manix when I am just camping but during hiking and backpacking, I think I found a knife that will replace it.

Does anyone know how strong these CF MIlitary knives are? I am not planning on killing a wild boar with mine but I may have to chop some smaller branches and do other rough work with it.

Another forum member used his G10 Military in the bush in Africa and it held up better than his Manix !!!
Maybe he'll chime in with more details.

go with the bg-42 kind it has nested liners and one of the best liner locks I've used.

I carried a military through 2 deployments and did all types of abusive things to it and it never failed.

Mine is the BG-42. I didn't know it has nested liners. Are you sure? It seems very light to have liners but it is possible because the CF doesn't weigh much.

I have to admit, I know nothing about BG-42 as compared to other steels. I am very familier with VG-10 and CMP-S30V, how does it stack up against those? I had a BG-42 Sebenza and I traded it off. When the guy got it, he was like "Wow! I didn't know I was getting the BG-42 version! That makes the deal even better!". And I was like "huh?".

BG-42 is a very good steel I like it better than CPM S30V because its a little easier to sharpen. and I sould have said partial skeletonized nested liners. Its the first military to have them, you should be able to see them when you look at the liner lock from under the knife at a slight angle on the right side.

I really like the CF BG-42 Mili. I sent my Manix to Spyderco to fix some vertical play and someone from UPS stole it. As soon as I get my reimbursement, I'm pretty sure that I'm going to get the CF Mili to replace it. I've read a lot of positive opinions about BG-42, but I really don't know the difference. I admit that if I do get the BG-42 version, it'll be off of that hype (fingers crossed). Anyone else have anymore insight on the differences of S30V & BG-42?

I work in an agricultural environment, and I have put my cf bg42 through its paces . . . it has not failed. I love the weight (or lack thereof) of the mili, and the large blade is perfect. I have used my mili to pry thin strips of metal for a small electrical job, and the tip seemed far stronger than I would have imagined. I am thoroughly pleased with the mili. Solid knife, really.

It is about the best knife I have ever carried for hiking and backpacking, because of its light weight. I took one on a weekend backpacking, fishing trip, and did everthing with the knife. It worked perfect. I had a fix blade, but never took it out of the pack!
