hey guys...so i just recently ordered my little forge fromdarren ellis....i sent him an email but thought i would ask the experts here as well.....a guy was selling a 60 pound propane tank real cheap.....now i thought i could fit it in my car by the dimensions he gave me...just sit it in my front seat....by the measurements i think it'll fit....it is too cheap to pass up.....anyway does it matter what kind of propane tank it is?....r there different types of propane tanks?....will they all hook up right to a forge?....any info would be appreciated.....ryan

Ryan-

If it's that size, you shouldn't have a problem. You'll need a regulator on the cylinder and a propane hose running to your burner... but the tank should work fine so long as it doesn't have any leaks or a damaged valve.

With smaller tanks, they have to have an OPD (overfill prevention device) but I think the cut-off for that is a 40# tank. Of course there are places that will still give you grief. My 100# tanks do not have them, and are not required to have them either. The gas-station in town will not fill them for me, insisting it's illegal. Stupid Bastards.

thanks alot nick....i appreciate the reply....he was actually selling a 60 and a 100 pound tank.....he wanted 50 bucks for both of them.....i called a few places today and the average for a 40 pound tank to buy was like 130 or so.....i called a buddy who has a refrigeration business and he jumped at the chance for a 100 pound tank....doesn't know wat he's gonan do with it yet but at that price he'll find something to do with it i'm sure.....hope all gies well...i'm gonna drive down there tomorrow ...it's only bout a half hour away too.....ryan

Ryan

Some states have passed laws against filling tanks that don't have the new valves with the float valve to shut them off if they are tipped over. Call your local propane dealer to see what he has to say.

thanks jim.....so if it doesn't have the new valve....can i add one?....i'm guessing no but.....ryan

so the valve does what?....prevent gas from leaking out if the tank is tipped on it's side?....isn't it sealed somehow?.....how can it just start leaking?.....or am i missing something....ryan

i'm gonna call a propane place when they open in the a.m.....ryan

There may be inspection dates.

On the 20 pound cylinders, they will refuse to fill any cylinders over 10 years past the inspection date.
Inspection dates are stamped in at the top handle / ring.

The bigger tanks have different rules.
Yes, i do believe addon new valves are available, welding supply shops...

While you are talking to the propane dealer, get price quotes on delivered fuel.
others have mentioned here, it is cheaper to get it delivered than to go get it.

Ryan- I don't know about your area, but around here some of the propane suppliers like Cenex will put a new valve on your tank for a fee.

thanks guys....i'll check it out in the a.m. and give a few people a call.....i really appreciate all the advice.....ryan

how in god's name could it be cheaper to have fuel delivered?....that makes no sense whatsoever.....i'll find out when i call around though....ryan

I think Steven's factoring in your own fuel costs to get to the propane supplier Ryan.

Most places around here charge something like $0.30 more per gallon to deliver. Last time I checked anyway. When I build a new shop, I'll have a 200gallon or so tank, and get it delivered just because it's a PITA to have to go get it.... but for now it's cheapest/easiest for me to fetch it.

ohh i got ya now....i can definately see it being cheaper the bigger the tank u have....i can't keep the hundred pound tank.....it's just too big for my area....so the 60 pound one is mine.....i'll let u know how it goes tomorrow...hopefully i score a good tank....ryan

just found out...60 pounds and up don't need the new valve...the date just hasto be current....they said it lasts 12 years.....i guess what happens after that?....you have to get it checked out by someone official?....ryan

I think you can take it to a fire extinguisher place and have them check the tank and stamp it. I've had Brendle Fire, our local fire surpression company, recertify some tanks for me.

thanks fo rthe info will.....the date is old so technically it has to be recertified....i'm sure some places would fill it otherwise without checking the date buti'll get it checked out to be on the safe side.....ryan

Hey guys, do you have to have a license or certificate to have and operate an LP tank over 50 pounds? If it's not required by local law, do you think it would be a good idea to take the short course and get the certification?
I worked for a forklift company in Knoxville Tn and they sent me down town for the certification test after giving me a book to study for a week or so and the test was a walk through!
Just something for you guys to think about for safety and liability and such!!

Ryan Just a quick thought, in Alberta once the date runs out the tank has to be replaced regardless of the condition. NO INSPECTION.

Around here one way to get around the OPD valve is to tell them it is for a weed burner. The guy here told me that if you tell them that they will fill the old tanks without the OPD valve, otherwise they either refuse to fill, make you buy a new tank, or change the valve out.
