Got a doozy for you: What makes a knife "Real"?

So your measuring stick for what constitutes a real knife is a guy who specializes in "jewelry knives"??? :p ;) :foot:

A fantasy knife is most easily defined as something that looks like it was made by, or at least inspired by, Gil Hibben. ;) :) I think of fantasy knives as those that put funky lines and "kewl" factors as the main objective and don't represent the "form follows function" notion.

I've made one, and AKAIK, it will be the only one that ever comes out of my shop. :barf: ;) :)

Fantasy knives are only loosely based on any normal knife pattern. Art knives are based on standard patterns, but modified or decorated to enhance their artistic value over utilitarian value.
The two examples below show the difference clearly. Neither one would normally be used as a real knife, but both will cut .

Patrice, this is a question that really should only be asked to Crocodile Dundee!
There is no correct answer.
If you say it is a knife I believe you.
Have fun, don't be too serious!

It has to exist as a 3 dimensional physical reality, or object.

There are lots of things that cut that aren't knives, and even a dull knife is still a knife.

A knife is a hard thing to define, but I think it has more to do with the form, geometry and culture than anything else.
