I've been researching now for months and just found out that I'm getting a fairly substantial tax refund, so I finally sprang for a Lava. All I can say is, "Wow!" this thing is definatly a pocket scapel. Out of the box it shaves as good as my razor, and fits the hand way better then much bigger folders I've had (I have large hands). It isn't my first Spyderco, back in the day I had a Spyderco Police that I snapped the blade in half on trying to pry some frozen steaks apart, it was a really nice knife as well though. After several less then satisfying experiances with other brands I'm back with the good stuff.

Congrats on the new Lava. It's a great little knife. CLB really knows what he is doin!

This little knife really appealed to me when I saw it for the first time recently.

I've been toying with the idea of getting one ever since (that or the Scorpius). I cannot justify the purchase in any way - it will be pure indulgence.

But they sure look like fun little knives./

So how about some pics then? ;)

I would put some pics here, but my wife is at the inlaws right now and has my camera with her for about a week. I would use her's but it isn't a very good camera and frankly wouldn't do the knife justice.

congrats on your Lava FLYBYU44

I love my Lava :D So much so I have another 2 more coming my way soon :), an they are pimped up versions !

I finally took mine to work with me today. I use my knife at work for cutting up boxes and cutting plastic wrapping off stuff. I would use an utility knif e but they don't supply us with those, so I use my own. Usually I carry a SAK soldier which works well enough, but goes dull fast cutting up boxes. Today I tackled a cardboard shipping box that was about 3/8" thick cardboard, the little Lava just zipped through it, and still shaves arm hairs off even after that. I'm really impressed with it, it's smaller then my SAK, but it cuts like crazy and holds a nice edge. If I had more money I would buy another, we'll see when my income tax comes.

I noticed that my new Lava had a slight amount of blade play, I guess my fault for not checking it out better. Anyway I was pretty disappointed, until I came up with an idea and tryed it out. I wrapped a old shirt up several times so it was around 2" think and then folded it around the knife handle with the blade out. And then I took my visegrips and clamped them as hard as I could over the handle by the blade. I took them off and unfolded the shirt, voila, no blade play. The thing is rock solid now. Thought I would pass that on if you are having troubles with your stainless handle Spydie.

Standard fix on my old slipjoints if they went wobbly: wrap the handle to prevent scratching and then hammer lightly, a few taps at a time, until the blade was tight. This would push the bolsters down around the pivot, and on a couple of cheapies, it actually peened the pivot over, locking the fix in place.

That would work too I guess, I'll have to try that next time if it comes loose again. Thanks
