I recently bought a Vulcan 50# from one of my customers for $20!!! The edges near the horn are rounded pretty good, but it's nice and flat. I realize these are iron based steel faced, so say I was gonna resurface the top, and work on the corners a bit, how much thickness do I have to play with? Thanks Jack

On the anvils that I have seen with a steel plate welded on, I was able to see the line between the iron and the steel. You should take as little steel off as possible to level the surface. I'm not sure how thin you can surface the plate before you should stop.

If you cant' already see the line, you should be able to grind new steel and acid etch it to see the line.

I'm a little late to this post, but I'd say don't grind on your anvil.

Vulcan's are a cast iron body with a tool steel face. The quality of Vulcan anvils varies. If this ones in decent shape forge away.

I worried about grinding my anvils or not when I first bought them, before i started forging. and found using them with hot steel cleans things up nicely.
I am glad I waited before grinding on mine.

I finally got a good anvil this year. I looked for a long time. Now I've seen several available.... Of course.
