I mentioned clicking start - run and typing in "command" without the quotes and clicking okay to open a dos window in windows xp.
That's wrong - you don't type "command" with xp, you type "cmd" without the quotes.

actually either of those work, cmd is just a shortcut. And it isn't actually dos. Dos does note exist on XP. It is simply a command prompt.

That's true, but it looks like dos, and it's pulled up in a similiar way that a dos window was opened in 98. And a lot of the command line strings are the same.
Silly to call it a dos window, but I guess old habits are hard to break. ;)

okay ladies and gentlemen life is good. deleted the evil sbc/dialup software, configured my modem manually, and now my computer is quite possibly the most awesome computer in the world. as far as xp being evil i am much like a woman in that regard, I've made up my mind and will not be confused by the facts. as far as apple computers go, well just suffice it to say they make me nervous. and the people who use them even more so. they tend to be zealots regarding there choice of machine. I really appreciate all the help and want to say a THANKS. knife people are pretty good at being handy in many different areas. It's funny i got better help here than at the dell forum.
thanks again, ahgar, owner of the ulitmate computer.
your mileage may vary void in canada and places where farsi is the official language.

Apple zealots are funny :)

i prefer their laptops over Dell's laptops, they are just so solid (been using Powerbooks and Lattitudes 4 years or so)

i use Dells at work and at home, and i have very little problems

first thing i generally do though when i get one is install my own OS (Linux, XP, whatever)

and i have yet to see an ISP software that did anything good, or that was needed for anything. i'd only use it if it was absolutely necessary, and if it was, i'd be looking for a new ISP.

the best thing about Dell is their support/driver download site.

if you are trying to upgrade a Sony, or Compaq/HP good luck finding the right drivers on their site
