Got a new project...

Excellent project!

Do you plan to use the same lug pattern as a m7/m9?

Seems that way. I may be chopping up an old bayonet to fuse the parts or using a current pattern to make up one. The ring will be completely made up. Should have my 7 in this week, so hopefully have her posted up this weekend.

What happened!? I saw something, then it was gone....I saw lights...

What?

I love my beckers, but not sure how I feel about a Becker Bayonet. I have a soft spot in my heart for the old M-7, and I own quit a few.

Got started today, limited time, but that's what happens when you start your day at an upstart local brewery.

Anyway, First order of business was to take apart the two donor knives. I went ahead and donated the Camillus BK7 and almost mint M7.

After removing the handles of the M7 there was a pin going through the blade that needed removed to allow the ring to freely come off. Away the belt sander...

Next up, the bayonet lug locking apparatus needs to come apart. We tried heat, grinding and beating. Todd finally convinced it apart while I was doing a chore for the gf and getting more beer.

Here's the basics.

Had to make the ring a bit wider to accomadate a more manly piece of steel(sorry M7!) and longer slot for a deeper blade.

Getting the idea yet?

I hate this part, but thumb ramp's gotta go.

But we'll replace the jimping, just to keep Ethan's inspiration as much as possible.

Since this is gonna be a sticker more than a chopper/slicer probably need to sharpen the swedge.

Not quite done.

Sometimes the weirdest projects make me happy.

Oh, this will be something soon as well.

Something I should have done first off was strip the blade, but somehow that was forgotten. So last night at work with a bit of free time I did it. I also tried stripping whatever finish is on the M7's pieces. Tough stuff, stripper never touched it. I'll try sand blasting it this weekend. I want to get it all stripped for a more uniform appearance whenever we re-finish it.
Edit to add: My safety SNAFU. I was in too much of a hurry to get going with the stripping(typical male ) and didn't gather proper gloves. I went with the purple nitrite dentist type gloves. I knew they weren't solid enough, but thought they'd last for a few minutes. Yeah, a few minutes exactly. I kept noticing a stinging in my thumb, but wrote it off as being from my cut earlier in the day. My buddy noticed my deteriorating gloves and let me know. Quick rinse off and I got my first chemical burn. Very minor, but now I won't compromise gloves anymore.

Good stuff going on here Murph!!! I can't wait to see it done!!

Thank you sir! Hopefully you won't hafta wait long. I'm looking to finish it tomorrow. The big hold up was my failure to plan. I didn't realize that I don't even have a bayonet lug on my rifle(HBAR) until two weeks ago. I'm going to get one of my Dad's tomorrow. I'm taking the next two days off before my normal Christmas break.

I also realized through reading my entire thread again tonight, that I had previously stated we would fab up a new rifle ring. Not happening, we salvaged the old one, just made it a bit wider to accommodate more manly steel.

Also, this was my inspiration.

This wasn't the exact bayonet I was issued, but the same thing. I really just never liked the Ontario grips, too thin in the hand.

Thats awesome !!! Can't wait to see it done. I have an M7 bayonet & sheath for my Mossberg 590 shotgun. I would MUCH rather have a BK7 bayonet. Thats just too cool.

Ok, in Todd's shop now, here's what's happening. After a couple hours of extensive body work we got this.
